This is the forum for the XK8/XKR you will get a better response to your qustion in the XJ6 forum. Link below:

If you suspect timing chain problem you should try to rotate the engine by hand with a wrench. If it won't turn by hand it won't start.

In the heat of battle as the battery drops below 11.4 you will get engine rotation but not enough voltage to power the ECU properly
For the inline 6 engine confirm you have starter rotation so we can ship that and go else-ware on you engine
Fpr the 96 the # 1 is the fwd most cylinder as is was changed after 94.5t
A quick summation on the startinq sequence is......
Fuel : Put your finger on this trunk relay in the 2nd pic and feel for click . it will click on for 4 seconds then off by key to on position before start position . This primes the fuel lines .
The relay will click on the 3rd time when the ECU sees engine rotation by the Crankshaft position censor for the rest of the drive
Ignition :: The engine should have ignition timing without the Camshaft position sensor as by design reverts to the crankshaft in the starting sequence anyway , just takes more rotations to do so
