You may be on the right track with the fuel pump. They are known to fail after sitting unused for an extended period. But don't forget the fuel filter, that could be plugged. And check the drain next to the gas cap, they plug up and water can easily get into the tank.

UPDATE:

so today i attempted to tackle the fuel pump. i didnt look up anything about it really thought i was dropping tank but its not under the car found it in trunk. then discovered 2 impossible fuel lines above the rear diff that pissed me off so i cut me a hole that shoulda been there in the first place under rear window tray. cheap fuel pump after market so i was meant to reuse the old mounting gaskets but everything but the actual pump disintegrated when i went to pull it out the tank. for now i rednecked it and ziptied it up in the tank to the mounting hook... now that i have a access point ill probably try find gasket set and put it in later. OH, by the way pump was both bad AND had the hose blow off the thing feeling pretty good about tomorrows project of replacing all the **** i took outta trunk trying to pull tank and starting the car ill let you know.

almost forgot i have question too... the fuel gauge reads basically zero gas but the tank was full of fuel when i went fishing for pump and debris so where is the unit that senses that stuff? is it the thing that sits on the side of the tank in the trunk area with 2 pin wire connection? maybe it needs replacing? lmk whats up.

Hi nickxj6,

Yes, your fuel gauge problem probably has to do with the fuel level sender, which does mount on the side of the tank and is accessed from the trunk (Part 8 in the diagram below). If your fuel gauge was working properly before, it seems possible that while you were replacing the pump, you may have wedged the float and rod down at the bottom of the tank when you secured your pump with zip ties:

Please don't take this the wrong way, but you seem to have been surprised by a lot of details on this job. All of the things you discovered are well known and have been widely reported on this forum, including how to remove the fuel lines on the underside of the tank, and the alternate method of cutting an access flap in the parcel shelf. A little more research on the forum may save you more surprises in the future!

Also, the diagram above is from jaguarclassicparts.com, a great place to view exploded diagrams, or you can download the Jaguar Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) from this forum. If you don't have the Workshop Manual and Electrical Guide, they're available for download in pdf form.

There's really no reason to begin any repair or service job without the same information available to Jaguar technicians, plus the collective wisdom of this forum.

Cheers,

Don

i kinda prefer to just go at it and look later if anything comes up. car i bought for 500 bucks hasnt ran for 2+yrs only paint is bad on it... and fuel pump lol!
we thought the day i went to get it that it had no gas but has alot of gas or varnish rather.

im probly gonna get the mounting isolator thingy if i can find one that isnt arm and leg

could you maybe answer a previous question on this thread i had about the rear seat controls fuses (under rear seat fuse blocks) on both sides were using a 30amp instead the 25 recommended on my panel guide thingy
same thing with the air pump (right hand engine bay block) fuse 30 instead 25
so my question is were these changed to actually need 30amp at sometime either from factory and they didnt update the fuse guide or a TSB quick fix to solve a problem with constantly blowing the fuses?
reason i think this is because the family i got this from didnt even change their own oil and this is 1 owner car i cant see both seat fuses in 2 different panels blowing and both times the mechanic going 5a over recommended

I could only guess, but perhaps one of our other members will know. Anyone?

It is not unusual to see higher amp fuses. If a car requires a couple of 30's and a couple of 25's, the redneck approach is to just buy 30's, it's cheaper that way.

Hi nickxj6,

Your statement above has been bothering me for a couple of reasons. First, as a do-it-yourself mechanic, there are numerous safety risks you face while working on a vehicle. Your best defense is to educate yourself before you begin. There is no system on a car more dangerous than the fuel system, so to "just go at it" and seek help later if something goes wrong is to potentially put yourself at risk of grievous injury or death.

Given all the information available to you, including the Jaguar service publications and the many tips posted by members of this forum, there really is no excuse for beginning a significant repair or service project without the required knowledge and precautions.

Secondly, you may find that many of the more knowledgeable members of this forum have little patience for educating others who can't be bothered to educate themselves. Learning what you need to know in advance is your responsibility. Others may be willing to help you after things have gone wrong, but they'll be more inclined to do so if they know things didn't go wrong simply because you launched into a project without taking the time to study the tips and cautions that could have kept you from getting into trouble in the first place.

Okay, I'll get off my soapbox now. Please keep us informed on your project!

Cheers,

Don
