Default Cutting out

Driving my 97 XJ6 to work this morning when I noticed it cutting out while driving, like I was taking my foot on and off the gas pedal. Not sure if it’s a misfire or a fuel issue. When I come to a complete stop then hit the gas it nearly stalls out, then seems to pick back up. No lights on the dash.

With the key to the run position and the engine not running check the middle wire ( w ire color Green/ Yellow ) on the throttle position sensor

As you twist the butterfly shaft very slowly by hand you should see a smooth climb in voltage from 0.60 volts DC on up

A voltage drop to 0 along the range of travel would indicate a bad TPS

This wire goes up and over the fuel rail and you can nick the insulation to get a test point

See page 50 pin Papa Indy 105 - 12 and page 49

You can also read this from the ECU connector with the battery disconnected as a resistance with 2 wires . the Red 12 and the Red 11

Any chance you got some gasoline contaminated with water? Had you purchased fuel within the past day or two?

Have you scanned the car for any stored diagnostic trouble codes? Many auto parts stores will scan it for free.

Cheers,

Don

Don,
I did clean out the gas door because it had all kind of garbage in it yesterday. I drove it on my lunch break and it did go into Limp Mode with the little transmission light. Idle is at about 400rpm. Barely kept it started.

If the drain in the gaiter around the fuel filler neck gets clogged with seeds and leaves and such, water can pool high enough to seep into the filler neck past the gas cap gasket. One way to test for fuel in the tank is to disconnect the fuel hose at the inlet end of the fuel rail (nearest the firewall), attach a garden hose or a section of 5/8" heater hose to the fuel hose and direct the other end into a suitable transparent catch container (a quart size Mason jar is perfect). Turn the key to position II (ON) to cause the fuel pump to run its priming burst and repeat turning the key off and on until you have at least a quart of fuel in your catch container. Set the container in a location where it won't be disturbed for 30 minutes or more, then inspect it to see if you can see that two layers have formed, water at the bottom, gasoline above.

A faster method of pumping fuel out of the system is to bend a large paperclip into a U, remove the fuel pump relay and jump terminals 3 and 5 in the fuel pump relay socket. Turn the key to position II and the fuel pump will run continuously until you turn the key off.

Cheers,

Don
