Does downpipe have asbestos for insulation
hi everyone,
I have taken the downpipe of my 1994 xj (x300) to mend a blowing exhaust. When i cut the heat shield off there was a layer of fluffy insulation wrapped around the pipe. looks like the stuff you get for loft insulation. Is there any chance it could be asbestos.
I think it is some form of fiber glass but don't really want to take the risk if it is asbestos. i know jaguar used to use asbestos a lot but can not really find when they stopped using it.
i have a pic but it is not very good
any help is appreciated
thanks Neal

Welcome to the forum neal222,
Information from the HSE (Health & Safety Executive) gives the relevant dates for the prohibition of asbestos content in UK manufactured motor vehicle as 1973 for insulation and 1999 for the friction material in clutches, automatic transmission, brake linings, and in gaskets. There was an exception that pre-1973 vehicles could continue to be fitted with asbestos containing brake shoes until 2004. The supply, possession for supply and fitting of asbestos products to motor vehicles, trailers etc is now banned.
Regardless of not being asbestos, you should still take precautions when dealing with any dust or fibrous material removed or disturbed in car maintenance.
