Drivers door handle not operating
Hi all, recently encountered a problem opening my drivers door when the handle pulled back completely and now I cannot get out from the inside without first opening the lock on the dash, then opening the windows to access the handle outside, then closing window and locking again from outside. On inspection the cable seems to have broken away from a small metal clip that is inside a plastic bit which seats into the handle mechanism itself.
Has anyone had any experience with this problem? Can it be soldered, require new cable, or is it something that comes complete with the handle? Also any ideas on how to change would be very much appreciated.

To the best of my knowledge the handle/door pull comes complete with the cable and is a bit pricey. A secondhand handle should be easy enough to get from a breakers. To remove the handle just prise back the small square tab that sits in behind the actual "pull" and remove the screw behind it. The cable can be detached from the handle easily enough as it's just held in place with a small lug, a bit like a rawlplug effect, whict the cable expands to hold it in place. Self evident when you look see. To remove the cable from the lock mechanism you have to remove the ( upper only section possibly?) of the door card and its a similar arrangement at this end also. To remove the door card, prise the wood trim, very gently outwards, towards you, at the end nearest the front part of the door and slide it forward, and it will slide off the tangs that hold it in place, remove the screws beneath, not forgetting the little one hidden just beneath the air intake rubber grommet thingy at the front end of the door. Just lift back the outer edge of this rubber and you will see the screw. Hope this helps. If you are stuck for a handle you might swap one from the back, if they arent used all that often?

I have had that problem. The inside handle is connected to the latch with a cable that is the same as the one on the passenger side. These cables are not much different than motorcycle cables. I believe the cable for the back doors is a different length. There is a plastic keeper on each end; the one on the door latch end broke on mine. I was able to make a keeper which lasted for about 6 months before the cable frayed and the stop ball end started to come off. The distance between the stop ball and the cable shroud is precise and not getting it right means your door locks don’t work right. If you are buying a used one they are usually sold with the handle. Get a passenger side (usually cheaper) remove the cable and keeper then install on the driver’s side.
