Default Engine stutter

Good day. I have an 96 XJ6. Recently put it on the road. Drove fine on way to work byt went to a carwash before work and it startted sputtering after the wash. So i figured something got wet. Let it dry all day and the drive home was fine until like 2 miles from home, When the engine started stuttering again. Now occasionally when i drive if i get over a certain RPM i lose all throttle. At first its 3000 rpm, then 2500 rpm and keeps falling to below 1500 rpm. Basically if i put the pedal all the way down it either revs up to that number then stops climbing or it goes up to that then jumps to a higher rpm but no throttle. I checked as many hoses as i could for leaks but none were found. My father seems to think its the spark plug wires or coils getting wet but i dont see that happening with them onto of the motor under a gasketed cover. Not alot of moolah in my pocket so the cheaper the fix the better. Trying to make this my daily driver.

Was the car sitting in storage prior to this? If so, how long?

Weird things can and do happen.

Hoses?

On one hand I think checking electrical connections would be more appropriate.

On the other hand all the underhood connections are sealed so it's unlikely that water got in but, still, you never can tell. Not really sure how carwash water would get into the engine bay, though, unless it has spray nozzles under the car shooting upward.

Do check the connections to the ECU....behind the RH kick panel. Water drips have been known to attach the pins.

The carwash thing might be pure coincidence. This brings coils back into the picture as they're a known problem area.

Sorry I don't have something more concrete. You gotta begin somewhere, though, so check as many engine/ignition/injection realted connections and grounds as you can get your hands on (including connections at the battery), check the ECU pins.

Others will chime in

Cheers

Also check your fuel filler cap. There is a drain hole beside that can get clogged leading to the area becoming flooded and water potentially entering the fuel tank, especially if the cap is not sealing properly.
