Default EVAP Monitor won't reset

Hey all, I feel like I'm SO close yet so far....

After a ridiculous amount of money to get my car clean enough to pass a tailpipe test, I have 2 monitors that won't reset, and a very recent change in the law mean I have to get down to just 1 to pass CA smog.

The EVAP monitor and CAT monitors haven't been set, and I've read that the EVAP monitor needs to set before the CAT monitor will run, so that means I'm going no further until it's done.

I now have P0446 & P0452 codes that weren't there before (they just appeared after a fill-up), but no CEL.

I made sure the gas cap was good n tight, but after a decent amount of driving, the codes haven't gone away so I think I'm gonna have to clear them and start all over on the monitors.

To my questions:
Since those codes are both related to EVAP, could it be the case that the EVAP pressure sensor needs replaced?
How is that done? Can it be reached with the gas tank in place?
If not, how is the tank pulled?

Help appreciated as always.

If like other cars, the EVAP self-test will only be performed when there's more than 1/4 and less than 3/4 tank of gas.

Default Update

I cleared the codes and went for a drive.

No codes came back so I'm pretty certain the gas cap was the issue.

All monitors reset in 15 miles except the EVAP and CAT, so I'm off for a longer drive tomorrow in sucky traffic.

Fingers crossed!

Default Update update

Just got back from a 120 mile drive in mixed stop-go freeway traffic, twisty mountain terrain, fast freeway, the whole gamut...

Plugged in the scanner, and hey presto! P0446 and P0452 codes are back! Still have the 2 monitors wanting reset too.

On a whim, I decided to have a look at the gas cap, even though it was just replaced a couple of smogs ago...

The cap didn't "feel" all that tight undoing it, and the seal/filler lip were both very wet with gasoline around the OUTER edge. The small amount of dirt collected around the filler was damp with gas too... that ain't right, so I'm now suspecting a bad gas cap.

My thinking:
If the cap's not sealing, the EVAP system won't be able to maintain pressure or vacuum, possibly throwing bogus codes and not permitting the EVAP monitor to set. Sound feasible?

I've ordered a new cap, so now waiting again.

That's sound logic.

Wow..that's some fast delivery... New gas cap is here (ordered it Wednesday night) and fitted, guess it helps when the vendor is just up the road in LA area...

More driving tomorrow, another update soon.

And your point is??? Yes, a gas cap can cause those faults. As can a split hose or a leaky evap valve. So you might have any one of those and whatever theman found is not relevant for your car!

SPARKENZAP are you the registered forum dickface?

What makes you think you can refer to people on such belittling terms?

I am sorry you feel belittled, I really do. I gave you the documented and actual causes for that code. I did not mean to belittle you, but I did mean to belittle the approach of voting on what might be a problem rather than troubleshooting a specific case. Good luck on finding your problem.

What are you talking about? Are you referring to the correct person?
