Faulty brake light mechanism

Faulty brake light mechanism
I've worked out that the failure of my gear selector to sometimes come out of park is due to my brake lights not always operating when the pedal is depressed.
I've looked up at the pedal mechanism with a torch but can't see the lever which is supposed to operate and be connected to the light switch, nor can I see the switch.
To assist me, can someone tell me if the lever/switch is high up or is it visible without removing any panel(s). Also is the lever situated on top of the large brake pedal lever or behind it and again is it readily visible together with the switch mechanism?
It would really help if I knew where to look.
Also it's killing my back burying myself in the footwell trying to see them!
Thanks.

Thanks for that. Firstly. I have a back problem and secondly I'm not a contortionist. How on earth then is one of these things replaced by a garage mechanic? They're not all contortionists surely? I see that there is a large plastic black panel through which air blows and i feel like ripping this off as it prevents a view higher up the pedal.
Goodness knows how something like this can be fixed or replaced if it can' t be seen properly!
Thanks anyway, appreciated.

go to this thread: Correct brake light switch part number - LNB6420BB ?
There are instructions to do it along with the correct part number, it took me 45 minutes and yes I was upside down for a little while, also if you take the piece of plastic next to where your left foot is, it is easier to do.

Thanks so much for the advice. Not sure I'd I could take 45 minutes upside down. Might mean more pain killers! But if it gets the job done, then it may be worth it.
Ironic thing is, my vehicle is booked in for the Spanish vehicle test next week and the brake lights sometimes don't come on immediately, which of course means the gear stick is stuck in park for that period. Will keep fingers crossed that all goes well for the test and the brake lights operate when I press the pedal.
Thanks again.

Which piece of plastic are you referring to? Do you mean the vertical piece which is on the extreme left through which the bonnet (hood!) release catch passes? BTW, I'm referring to a LHD vehicle. This plastic piece seems quite a way from the position of the brake pedal, so am I guessing the actual switch isn't actually above the pedal but to the left of it?
At the moment I can't even see the switch, so with the plastic removed is it more visible or not? It would really help if I could see the thing at least!!
Thanks again.

Yes, I don't remember why I took that plastic piece off but I did. Anyway, it looks like the original switch is still available from here:
Jaguar Brake Pedal Switch Xj6, Vdp, Xj12 95-97. LNA6420BA, DBC10800 - Jaguar Parts Specialist
If you use this one as opposed to the newer one it just plugs in:
BA is the original. BB is the replacement that you need another harness for

Thanks for that, appreciated. Hoping, that as the switch seems to work albeit unreliably, that it can be removed and repaired in some way (cleaned/adjusted?). Or maybe the symptoms indicate failure and replacement is the only option. Your link for the earlier BA part is for a US supplier. I've searched some UK. sites and the only one they seem to have is the later BB model which as you advise, will need a new harness.
Calling into a garage later to see if they can remove and check the switch currently in place. Although I can see it by lying on my back, I really cannot physically spend much time in this position doing the work.
Not sure though if it would be more advisable just to buy a new switch and harness and get that fitted. Certainly if it could be repaired in some way, that's the cheaper and preferable option for me.
Thanks again.
