Default First Problem!

Set off to get my new tires installed this morning and ran into my first problem...

When applying the brake while in park to shift to drive, there is a audible clicking that I can feel through the shifter. Car drives fine but I want to tackle this before I'm stuck in PARK somewhere.

I assume this is a shifter solenoid of some sort that is failing?

Thank you for your help!

It doesn't necessarily mean that it's failing. It just means the shift lock is disengaging when you press the brake pedal.

Likewise! The click is audible and when you stop hearing it, that's when you have a problem. It's just doing what it's supposed to do.

I think I should be more clear.

In the first 500 miles of owning the car, I could barely hear the click. Now it is loud enough to be heard from the back seat and the shifter literally kicks against my hand.

There is definitely a problem.

No it still sounds fine, I can feel mine against the shifter as well and can definitely be heard in the back seat.

Well that's weird.

It was smooth like butter until this morning. Id like to get back to that.

It is the solenoid, right?

Honestly, I can't remember if mine was ever "silent and smooth". As far back as I can remember (it's not something I pay attention to though) it's almost always made a click or audible sound when I press the brake while I'm in Park.
Getting to the solenoid isn't too tough though. You can see it if you remove the leather trim surround on the shifter

Would caution the old adage "If it's not broke don't fix it"

I would like to get it back to how it was. It's a minor thing but one of the things I love about this car is it's smooooothness.

Can someone confirm the part that this is? Is it called a shifter lock-out solenoid or something similar I assume?

Can someone point me in the director of an exploded view of the shifter assembly?

Thanks for tolerating my rookie enthusiasm everyone!

It's normal and you will never "fix" something that is normal. They all do it. I suggest purchasing a different vehicle, cause if you think this is a problem...your in store for a treat.

There is a piece of rubber, a "bumper" of sorts that deteriorates over time and gives up the ghost so to speak, it's no biggie just makes an audible "click" when it does as the solenoid moves the gate to allow the shifter to move and it's no longer hitting "rubber". Jaguar ownership is not for the faint of heart.

This brings to mind, the story (urban myth or otherwise) about e man who bought a new Rolls Royce and returned it to the dealership because the clock was ticking too loudly! And they sorted it!

I don't hear my click most of the time since I've tuned it out, but after reading this thread last night I paid attention this morning. The click was audible to be sure. No big deal to me considering other annoyances trump this one, like my clock LCD screen reading parts of time, incorrect time, and very rarely the correct time with full pixel output.

Jags are fun in part because of these little things.
