Front wheel bearing adjustment.
Hi all
Both of my front wheel bearings ('96 X300) have a bit of play in them, more than is normal. I tried adjusting one of them but tightening the nut on the end of the spindle made no difference to the play. The wheel will go very stiff to turn and still have play top to bottom and side to side.
They are taper roller bearings aren't they? The X308 have double ball bearings which you can't adjust.
It's not the ball joints as you can see the disc moving relative to the brake pads.

I would begin by removing the hubs for an good inspection of the bearings

Common error. The disk is held on by the wheel, so there is your problem. When I adjust the bearings I use several washers and two of the wheel nuts to hold the disk in place.

If your car has OE Jaguar wheels, you can just pop the center cap, install the wheel, and use the wheel to test for bearing movement as you adjust the nut. I forgot to show a photo of this method but Parts 3 and 4 of the series at the links below on front wheel bearing replacement describe various recommended adjustment methods and the one I have personally adopted.
