Smile fuel guage reading zero

This most likely is a simple problem of a wire having worked loose or has a corrosion problem. The 95 XJ6 has 111,000 miles on it. But this morning when I drove the car the fuel guage didn't even move from zero and the red empty light came on. It has only used 2.5 gallons since filled and it was less than half empty when filled. So I don't think the float is stuck. I haven't checked the sender wiring yet, but thought I'd see if any of you have had a simular problem and there might be a unique solution.

Thanks to one and all.

Right after I sent that message I opened up the trunk and checked the wiring. When I jiggled it the guage jumped. AHA the contacts are dirty. So cleaned the contacts and plugged it back in and the gauge read almost full which is where it should be since I had only used 2.5 gallons. Next morning I drove the car and gauge didn't read as full as the night before. And it slowly continued to go down toward empty. And I mean slowly. Got home and cleaned contacts again. No help. It was on dead empty. But when I rocked the car the gauge jiggled up some. I checked the sender with an ohlm meter and it read open circuit. So I wll order a new sender unit and wait until I use most of the fuel and replace the darn thing. Any tips on replacing it?

Thanks guys.

DONT SMOKE WHILST DOING IT.

Sorry, could NOT resist that one.

Order a new o/ting seal as iy "should" be replaced at the same time, and I dont think they supply one with the tank unit.

Disconnect the battery, so radio code is required later, dont forget that one, and take all the common sense precaucations for open fuel containers.

Use a brass punch to tap that ring around (bras dont spark ha) and DO NOT force anything, as it is mainly plastic.

Had mine out a few times, and compared to the XJ-S the X300 is as simple as it gets.

I ran my tank nearly dry before I removed mine, then parked the car on a slight incline facing down. Once I had removed the float sending unit I took it all apart and cleaned the contacts, then using my amp meter checked the resistance readings as I lifted and lowered the flow after all it;s just a sliding resistor really. Once that was working I replaced it back in the tank and filled it up. It has worked now for over a year know problems..

I intend to install a new with a new "O" ring. The radio code bothers me. I have no idea as to how to obtain that. I do have the manuals with the car and will check those for that code. But, I have replaced the battery once and I had no problem with the radio. The radio has been repaired once and I disconnected the battery when removinb the radio. Again no code required. Comments please.

I agree no codes on my radio. The car sits in a garage 5 months of the year with the battery disconnected, never had a problem with the radio not working. The rest of the car well that's an ongoing love for work.

US radios have no code on the X300 non premium sound. I do not know for sure for premium sound systems.

The radios do not need the code if the head unit is set to USA. If the head unit is set to AUST then the code will need to be entered.

Hold the AM/FM Cassette Eject buttons and the setup can be changed.
