Greetings.
Greetings fellow enthusiasts.
Yesterday I purchased a 96x xj6 for my father. It’s a low mileage car and appears to be on great shape since it was garages all it’s life. The ride is superb and the motor is sound.
There are a few minor issues I hope people could chime in about. I have read various topics regarding my problems, but would love to her more updated solutions if there are any.
Cupholder is in ooen position at all timea. I can see the mounting hole that holds the device is broken.
Sunroof attemts to tilt up but gets stuck, sunroof slides back with no issues.
Radio gets stuck, but I fixed that using the tape method for now. At least we can turn it off.
Now the bit so snall stuff.
Steering will telescope. But not tilt up or down. Relay makes a sound but no movement. I can get a used motor, how hard would the install be ? Or can I manually wind the wheel down so it just stays there?
Sagging healsiner out back. I see no easy fix other than laying someone $300 to remove the headliner and re gluing the original material which is in good shape.
Throttle pedal is a bit stiff. Downshifts are reluctant unless fl

Throttle is a bit stiff. Down shifts are a bit reluctant unless floored. Not sure if that’s normal.
Can the shifts be adjusted and throttle lube up? I have read that perhaps throttle body needs removal and cleaning.
Looking forward on sorting this majestic ride for my father and being part of this community.
I myself deive a 90 w126 420 SEL.
Regards.

The Steering tilt has a sensor that gets gummed up with old lucubrate and can be cleaned .
the sensor pops off with clips . In putting it back on it has to be clocked and easy to do yourself .
The tilt motor ca be run with a battery charger but there is a high current arching warning . You can take a blade female side connector and place it on the motor terminals so you don't damage them .
There is a TSB on putting a motor with more power in but a cleaning works up to a point . The auto tilt up feature can be turned off with the large knob on the column .
The broken ears on the cupholder is common as there is a TSB on a new part but the original can be repaired
A good reference on the engine peripherals follows for the AJ16 and your Xmission on the non supercharged engine is a ZF4HP24 .

Best spark plus are old school Champion copper # X covered in a TSB , no exotics
The speaker surround foam on the original speakers are most likely turned to dust and can be repaired yourself with the original speaker

Just pull off the bottom half of the column cover and you will see the tilt motor on the bottom fwd . You will see the sensor on the car fwd side of the motor . Many small parts when opening up the sensor so plan accordingly . Some people leave out the wave washer on purpose

When exiting the piece of rolling art and pulling the key out the steering and seat retract and if the sensors do not agree that they have retracted to car does not go to sleep causing battery drain . t suggest keep the auto switch in the off position until squared away . See video .
Never put the car battery in backwards and a shop will error also so watch . Positive post in positive direction of car travel .

The material for the headliner can be found on the roll at the large fabric stores and is foamed backed as what deteriorates over the years and lets loose . The spray glue for new fabric is open for recommendations to replace the fabric / foam built up material . The shell exits out the back boor regardless of wither you have the 6 inch longer VDP model which is in the back door length .
The headliner material comes in 2 selections , boring and boring , B

Wow thanks guys. So much info.
I got an estimate from a shop near me to do the headliner for $500. Gonna see if the twisty pins work first for now. I can do mechanical work, but headliner is not my cup of tea.
Im more worried about getting the tilt to work. Even if it’s for one time. Gonna start with the sensor.
An thoughts on why the gas pedal is stiff ? Dirty throttle body? Or linkage?
