Default Has my Steering Rack Bush moved?

I decided it was time to try and do the steering rack bush fix. If you don't know what that is, look at @Don B excellent post from some years ago. Here's the link

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...es-diy-134396/

I removed the rack as I knew it would be easier to do the fix with it on the bench. But looking at my rack, I may have a bigger issue. I think the brackets have moved off the bush a bit. But I don't have a reference so can't be 100% sure. Can someone confirm this doesn't look right? The other side is more or less the same.

Hi Brendan!

I think you're right - the bushings have squeezed out of position. I also think you are right about where the stiffening shims should go.

If you cleaned the dirt and grime off of the bushings, then wetted them well with silicone lubricant spray, you might be able to work them back into the brackets with a wide flat-tipped screwdriver or such. You just don't want to use any kind of petroleum lubricant that could accelerate deterioration of the rubber bushes.

I'll be anxious to see what you figure out!

Cheers,

Don

Thanks for confirming my suspicion Don. I'll have a think on the best way to proceed.

Thank you. That's exactly the kind of picture I scoured the internet for yesterday.
