Default Headlining installation

Hi All

So I ordered a new headlining, took the old one out with no trouble at all although I had to bend it a little it, but I can't get the new one it. It's a lot stiffer and won't bend.

Any ideas?

Urgent help needed.

Spencer

You will need to bend it. Don't be frightened just careful.

The only other option is to remove a screen.

Which door are you trying to put it through?

Really? It's loads stiffer than the board I removed. The old one felt like an egg carten while the new one feels like fibreglass. It's hardly bends at all, I'm really worried about snapping it. I was trying to feed it in the passengers front door, the same as the old one came out of.

well, if it is FG as you say, then the only way to get it in is take the glass out...

I found there is more room if you use the rear door.

I did mine through the rear drivers door, it gives a better angle and you only need to slightly bend it length ways.

Put both front seats as far forward as possible then recline the backs as far as possible.

Really Mike? You had a brand new one made of what looks like fibreglass and you bent it? I've got a standard wheelbase 1997 3.2 executive. The manufacture of the board said either take the passengers front door off and take the passengers front seat out. Or the rear window. Neither options sound great, but got a guy who can do the window for £60 so I'm thinking of doing that option.

No not a new board, recovered my old one,

Try using the rear door as the angle is much better and it's only a slight bend thats needed that way.

I'm dreading doing this... local interior shop said unless the rear window comes out you'll have to live with a small crease in the middle... so... looks like the rear window will come out haha.

If you are recovering the original board there will be no crease visible.

Using the rear door to remove and replace the headliner means very little bend is required.

I agree. I creased my board a bit but it's invisible under the new headlining material. I guess it might depend on just how badly creased it is.

Cheers

+3 for me. I have done three X-300 or X-308 headliners, and I actually folded one nealy in two with the crease being side to side at the middle of the sunroof hole. By some light massage and finess (of which I am sorely lacking) with my finger tips, it is impossible to see the crease.

Right then - rear window removal.....

Are the bonded or in a rubber seal with a spreader. I've got a P reg.

If it's bonded you stand a good chance of breaking it trying to get it out.

Also remember that the receiver aerial for the remote fob is in the glass along with the heater element.

So is it stuck in with glue or just a rubber?

Mine doesn't look bonded, but you won't know until you take the chrome strip out.

Another way to tell is look for a join in the rubber strip. join = not bonded

Well I don't remember seeing a joint in either the rubber or the chrome. Also the glass has a black ring around the edge which a colleague of mine says that means its probably bounded as that's added so you can't see through the glass to the body work.

So is it easy to removed and replace a bonded screen? Assuming it is?

If its bonded then it has to be cut out, never seen one come out in one piece though.

If it does then the original adhesive needs to be cleaned from the body and the glass, one back in place it needs to be left for awhile before you drive the car other wise you could end up with a water leak.
