Default Heads up display unit.

Will an HUD unit fit into the OBD11 Socket on my 1996xj6 3.2ltr Jaguar and more to the point, will it work.

There are 2 different data bus protocols to be concerned if they match the HUD interface

From what I understand there was a change during X300 production

The data link connector is the OBD 2 port with the Orange wire and I might be backwards from the information I received in the past

What information would I need to get from the HUD display and? and thank you for your assistance and prompt reply.

The obd2 interface on your 1996 gives everything that the general HUD would want to display (RPM, Speed, engine temp etc etc) so there is no reason for it not to work.
Let us know which one you get
