I have a question for the group:
What about wrapping each coil in some sort of "spark shield" cloth? My knee-jerk thought is to use some HeatShield cloth I've bought from Summit racing (for another project), but it's aluminized, so not sure that's the correct solution.

I wrap my coil with a piece of intertube taken from a bike tire, snug fit plus no arching because of the rubber.

ronbros, they go bad because they are mounted in a hole in a cam cover and exposed in heat all the time. When the inner insulator plastic cracks because of the heat, they die. Plus there seem to be a lot of Chinese made coils in the market, which might be a biggest problem.
Given the possible issue with a build up of heat, would it make a difference if the coil cover was ventilated in some way? I am tempted to take the cover from my donor car and have a look see. Touch wood, I don't have any coil problems and still have the set from my donor as a back up, but maybe prevention is better than cure?

Then - wouldn't it be better to maintain the booth that fails, thus causing the coil to fail? You get new boots from Rock Auto for $15-20 each (and clean the metal rod) every couple years before the coils fail?

Obviously charred/cracked/damaged boots should be replaced.

Routine replacement of boots isn't necessarily gonna prevent coil failures, though, IMHO. I've examined the boots and pins of all my failed coils----OEM and aftermarket....and all have been in perfect condition.

Cheers

I've been lucky enough not have had problems, but I thought I read that the boots were cracking and shorting (hence, the light show) and causing them to burn up. Guess I was reading wrong.

The boots, made of a rubber compound will of course become harden, crack, which can lead to shorting. Same thing with the coils - its housing can develop cracks, thus shorting.

The last is what i've experienced - coils cracking. I currently have a couple of coils with known hairline fractures which i've encased with 1 1/2" 'discharge hose' , similar to this:

Watts SCDR25 1-1/2-Inch ID by 25-Feet Economy Flat Discharge Hose, Blue - Amazon.com Watts SCDR25 1-1/2-Inch ID by 25-Feet Economy Flat Discharge Hose, Blue - Amazon.com

I use this mostly to inhibit the shorting. The h/w store has some 1/16" rubber sheeting, which would probably be better for this.

Ultimately, I'd be interested in encasing the coil in "heat shielding". I'm researching possible solutions here: High Temperature Heat Flame Resistant Firesleeve Fiberglass Fibreglass Silica Materials
.

I got in Japanese coils today.

As you can see, the resin is changed from white to black, so it can't be info to distinguish a right coil.
I have got in 50 coils but unfortunately they came without boots, so I will have to sell them without boots to make them cheaper.

I sold Lucas and SMPE coils, both ended up in failure...
You will never want to be penny wise and pound foolish.

Ken

Hello Ken, many thanks for having interest in the coils.
To the US it is $81 each inc. shipping with tracking (approx. 2 weeks), I can give discount on multiple order, for I pay less for the shipping.
For 6 coils I can reduce $30 and some bonus discount, so the total will be $450.
If you prefer express shipping(4 days), the total will be $460.

Hope you will like it.

*When you need boots I think the cheapest place is Rockauto.
You can buy one at around $10 + shipping.

Just bought the last three from SNG. The other three I'd already done. Forgot to mention the forum when placing the order so have asked CS to discount after the fact. Fingers crossed.

Hopefully with those and some new plugs, the rough idle and part-throttle misfire will go away.

SNG UK are out of stock with no ETA.

(When I said 'last three' I meant they should be the last three I need, rather than SNG's last three)

I've given up on SNG completely. Every month they tell me "two more weeks". After three months I've had enough.

Cheap chinese ones it is then.

Found some hairline cracks in the coils when I changed my valve cover gasket today, thinking this could be causing the "shimmy" during idle.

I got no less than 50 coils in stock, but they don't sell as many as I expected...
So I offer discount for the member of this forum.
I don't want them to be dead stocks.

As I stated before, the coils are bought directly from Diamond Electrics in Japan, exactly the same as the genuine coils.
With a boot and a gasket, I offer $82 each inc. shipping.
I will reduce the price for multiple purchase.

If you don't need the boot/gasket I will reduce $15 each.
I would like the payment via Paypal.

Hope somebody will like this.

That's great Japthug. My budget is stretched a bit this month, but I'll be in touch soon.

Unfortunately our suppliers let us down on these multiple times. And we are currently unable to supply the 'Made in Japan' version.

We do however have an aftermarket version we have had good success with so far. We offer a full 12 month warranty on them, any failures within this time - we will replace FREE.

I didn't listen and a year ago purchased aftermarket Lucas packs of Ebay. Sold as EuroSpares. Last Monday I paid a $200 tow bill, just to have my 17 year old coil packs re-installed.

This issue needs to be resolved. OE coil packs will not last forever.

Hello, My old cat (1995 XJ6 ) had 3 coils replaced. IDK what my mechanic put in them but i want the other three replaced also this reason is because its still doing the dash flickering, he said all the coils are fine, i think not due to the flickering that remains. I also i don't want mixed coils (new/old). I read through this entire forum thread, and others, trying to figure out what to buy. To my understanding the hunt is for the made in Japan ones. There are coils everywhere! the ones I was even looking at are said to be crap (lol) and those are 90.00 each from Ebay (Eurospare) and another guy has "lucus" coils and shows the box and part numbers etc...but i think those are also crap or the cheap ones relabeled as someone said? however they are all crap according to this thread. But i seen a posting of someone mentioning a site called "RockAuto" They have coils on there for the XJ6, Three to be exact

AIRTEX / WELLS Part # 5C1176 {#88921406, C1203, LHE1510AB} ----166.00 (each)

STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS Part # UF384 ----424.00 (each)

The third one is that Beck one everyone hates so no point in mentioning that haha...

So,
has anyone tried any of the above?
Are any of those legit?
why in gods name is it 424.00 for ONE?
Has anyone found a way to get the made in Japan ones?

Fore reference, this is the "Lucas" coils ebay page:
