Question How Much Transmission Fluid should drain from plug pull

Took about a 15 km drive put xjr up on some jackstands and pulled the transmission drain plug. Almost exactly 3 litres drained, is that around the right amount. I was expecting much more the owners manual indicates 7.3 litres on a drain and refill for the XJR. I had checked the level before hand and it was correct. Do you think the amount in the owners manual is what I should have expected?????

IF, and I mean IF the fluid level was "correct" at opearting temp prior to dropping the plug, then I would measure the oil in the drain pan, and replace that amount only into the trans, then drive it to operating temp (about 15kms) and check on the dipstick, and top off as required.

Most times the owners book states an amount that is refering to "dry fill", which has NO relation to a "service fill".

Most transmissions are "about" 4 ltrs with a filter change, that is why trans fluid comes in 4ltr containers, and when you drop the filter away from the valve body much more fluid drains out.

On my X300 the drain only is 2.6ltrs, but drop the filter and the total drain is 3.8ltrs, which is a service drain amount. I have done 3 changes of fluid so far to introduce synthetic trans fluid to the ZF, and 2.6ltrs drains each time via the dipstick coupling (no drain plug on mine), and that is exactly what I pour back in the top.

On the TH400 in the V12 it is a tad over 5ltrs with a filter change.

I drained 10 (ten) litres from my xjr6. That drained over, perhaps, 2 weeks.

Yeah, I get about 3.5 litres from mine.

You can probably get bit bit more if the right side of the car is elevated higher.

BTW...If your drain pan is short enough to slide under the car you can do the drain-n-fills very easily, as the drain plug can be reached without elevating the car. Very convenient if you're planning on repeating the process several times to get rid of old fluid and introduce new.

Cheers
