Default intercooler upgrade

Has anyone put in a larger intercooler? or higher volume pump? Ive considered the electric chiller systems on the existing intercooler. But I cant find feedback from anyone who has done any of this. I live in the southeast. It's hot. My car doesnt overheat. But all my cars have always run better in the winter.

I haven't heard of anyone installing a larger intercooler but I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard for a fabrication shop to custom build one.
As for the water pumps, I know Bosch makes a higher rated water pump. Which I think its this one but I would have to do some research to see if it's compatible with our cars

I have the Ford/Bosch Cobra/Lightening intercooler pump on my XJR. It's supposed to flow more than the original.

<shrug>

The std Hella pump flows about 7litres/min in the XJR6 installation. The Bosch pumps flows 11litres/min in the same installation. I've done the upgrade myself.

So the bosch pump is a direct replacement correct? Just remove the old pump and install it?

The Cobra/Lightening pump is 'almost' a direct fit. Not quite. Some minor modifying of the mounting is required but my memory isn't good enough to be more specific, sorry. It was several years ago that I did the job.

this is a photo of an xkr upgrade. But their v8 xjr cooler looks very similar. And my memory says my cooler looks a bit like the other one. Bad news... $1200. It's a radiator though correct? Can I not just have a qualified rebuild shop make me up something? Seems like a shop near me built me a land rover series 3 radiator for a song some years ago.

Would putting a bigger/thicker intercooler block more airflow to the condenser and also main radiator though?

Wow, that's a monster intercooler.... would it even fit and clear the various other existing OEM parts without major modification?

$1200 is a bit steep as well.

Anyone recall the make/model of the Cobra/Lightening pump, and for those that installed the higher flow pump I am curious if it really helped reduce intake temps any.

Here are a few threads that touch on the different Bosch pumps:

Looking at the top mounting poles it looks like the intercooler protrudes outwards towards the front of the car so I think it should clear since there is some room between the stock intercooler and the bumper/grill. Only issue I see are the bottom mounting holes. On the x300's the mounting tabs are at the bottom of the intercooler and bolt onto some sort of brace assembly. And this aftermarket intercooler, the mounting tabs are on the side

I dont know. I suspect when moving its ok. The cowl area of my 97 is pretty well sealed and I think it does a good job of shoving air in on the move. Might need a fan upgrade for idle though.

To be fair thats a photo of an xkr upgrade. Couldnt find a comparison photo of their xjr unit.

I know, I was just trying to say that as for an upgrade, it looks like the physical dimension will fit but for an x300, the mounting tabs would need to be relocated to the correct locations.

Question Where is the darned thing?

BTW, does anyone have a good photo or description of where:
  1. The intercooler pump is located?
  2. The oft-mentioned inspection port one can open to verify coolant is fully filled in the intercooler circuit?
For some reason I just can't seem to find it upon a cursory inspection, and am having an equally tough time finding it on the parts diagrams.

The intercooler pump is located around the alternator area. If you look down in between there, there will be a black cylinder looking thing. It's mounted to the chassis.

I think the inspection port is the 19mm hex bolt that is on the top of the intercooler/intake manifold assembly. I wasn't aware there was one until your post but I just checked this morning and opened it up and I could see coolant almost to the top.

Default Interesting intercooler automatic mister

Thanks.

Here's something else that looks interesting, and it is low (relatively speaking) cost:

Intercooler Spray Controller

I've been thinking about doing that type of upgrade along with the aftermarket bosch intercooler pump after watching these two videos..

According to their tests, it does help cool down the intercooler a lot.

So with that automatic controller it could be a worthwhile upgrade..

Regarding larger pumps, I have a heater circuit pump from a scrap X300. It looks bigger than the stock intercoooler pump so I plan to see if I can find its output, as it could be a cheap (free) option. I also once read an article on Autospeed where they sugested significant general cooling impromrovements could be made by having even a shallow duct around the edge of a radiator / intercooler to make all the air go through it rather than around it. Two things on the never ending list, I need to finish the front suspension and a bit of bodywork first!

If really serious, one could also look at water or alcohol injection into the intake for similar reasons. Some owners in the other model sections have done this as well.

Not sure which would be more bang for the buck, injection versus intercooler spray, but $100 seems pretty cheap for the intercooler sprayer controller.
