Default Leaper Removal

Hey, I tried looking this up but I couldn't find anything clear. Is it possible to remove the leaper when I am somewhere where it is likely to get stolen, and then put it back on later?
How does the leaper come off? I have a 1997 XJ6.
-Thanks, Oden

24mm plastic nut
Easy accessed from underside of bonnet with regular socket.

Unless someone has also put double-sided tape on the underside of the leaper like i did on mine to ensure it stays pointed the right way.

If I take the double sided tape off, does it move around a lot and possible scratch the hood? Or is it okay to take it off?

I think your will have a 2nd alignment pin hole in the bonnet to keep it straight .

The leaper did not come on all X300 models and his Australian model / market may have started that way even though it is a 4.0 liter engine

The tape may be to keep the leaper from fretting or rubbing the paint

You can keep the sticky side of a good duck tape on the leaper side only for a clean leaper removal

For a removal tool a set of channel locks will remove the 24 mm , cheap at Harbor freight

Some AU models came with, some came without. most had it.
it may have been an optional delete.
certainly most down under have it.

Sovereigns did come with them however I feel it may not be the original bonnet on mine.
there is no alignment hole on mine.
i put the double sided tape to secure it and protect from scratching.
however removing it now has become extra hard as i will need to remove the tape carefully.
next time i will not adhere the leaper to the bonnet.
however i should only ever need to remove it to get my bonnet re-wrapped or repainted and then in that case it will not matter.
