Locking system stopped working 1996 xj6 -- Security Module?
Hi all, the locks on my wife's 1996 xj6 just stopped working. neither the fob nor the key will get any of the electronic locking working or the trunk. I checked fuses all seem good. It was suggested to me this could be the security/locking module but for the life of me I can't find where in trunk it's located. Does this make sense it's the security module?

The SLCU is located under the gas filler opening under the side trunk compartment carpeting , but no need to access it yet .
There is a many pin connector above the fuel tank itself that may have become unlocked and migrated loose . Don't try too hard in getting the locking pin engaged .
Since you have a US model have you removed and brought the 2 battery cable terminals together as a " Hard Reset " . This brings the SLCU back to zero state as it may be out of sequence . The engine control will be off until you run it and it relearns it's perimeters .
The quality of the FOB battery could make the difference

Easiest thing to do is verify the FOB batteries are not put in backwards as this happens .
Remove both + and - battery cables off and touch them together as this resets the SLCU
The BT4 connector is behind the fwd trunk wall of the tank cover . Do this last as the connector can be a pain to reconnect .

I’m watching this as the same thing has happened to my 96 XJS.
I get the security beep, but no locking attempt. Manually locking the car, either by key or when inside the car, regardless of which door, also does not auto lock the locks. I can not hear any attempt by the little motors. It just feels like a completely manual locking system with absolutely no automation.

So I was getting the same problem after I changed out my bumper. However, it was locking and I would walk away and the alarm would go off. Sometimes I had to manually lock it and sometimes if I hit the remote the doors would unlock but the trunk I had to manually do it. I think I had everything happen. So as I said I changed out my bumper. The issue was when I hooked up all the cables back behind the bumper there was one plug that was loose and it was on the right side of the bumper. What it was........ no clue. However as soon as I tighten it....the problem went away.

Like she said FIRST thing to always do is a hard reboot of the car by disconnecting the battery cables and holding them together to drain the capacitors in the modules to reset the computers. This is not different than unplugging a modem, restarting your phone, satellite, pc, laptop etc. Always do this first with any kind of issues like this.

Some people get results for a short touching and others like myself seem to get fuller results with a longer period . I put my car out of configuration alot as I tinker and found by removing both cables and place a heavy towel over the battery itself posts I can use a starter jumper cable to clamp on the cable terminal ends . Made a more practical smaller version with medium sized clamps for ease of use but for a one time / first use a jumper cable will work .

Security Help
We just purchased a 1997 XJ6 Vaden Plas and are having the same problem. I did remove the trunk panel and did find a cable hanging down. I am hoping this may be our problem. Cannot find where the cable connects. Do you have any further information or reference material? Any help would be much appreciated.
