Unhappy Neutral safety Switch problem?

hello everyone, I have a 1996 XJ6, and it hasent happened in a while, but over a few months in a for a while, I would go to start the car and nothing would happen, then I would just tap the shifter a inch forward and it would start. I wouldnt even have to change gears, Just literally tap the shifter and it starts. Is this a neutral sfatety switch problem? Or maybe a bushing that keeps it in place? I was told either or. So I would rather buy a bushing, rather than a 1,000 dollar switch new, and 500 used. thanks.

I would start with the bushings. One, they are cheap so not much ventured on the guess. Two, they probably need changing anyway. Three, very well could be the problem. Four, beer and football. Stash beer and small TV in garage Friday night. Saturday about kickoff time announce going out to work on car. Jack up vehicle and change bushings. Make nice mat to lay on. Set up TV and drag cooler with beer out of sight but accessible from your position. Insure feet extending from car are in sight so your hours of hard work are fully appreciated. Enjoy an afternoon of college football without further honey does, soccer game transportation, or pre-Christmas shopping shopping.

thanks kenn, your the best! Just 2 quick questions, where can I find these bushings? Also, would I be able to check if the actual switch is going bad just incase?

I've heard folks say they got them at the dealer. I'm not sure of the part number. Sorry. The neutral safety switch is called the rotary switch. No good way to test them that I know about.

hey drew, what did you have to pay to do that? I just called my local jaguar dealer and they said there is no bushings that go on the rotary switch, its just the switch itself. thanks.

I had a ton of other stuff done at the same time. I lknow the guy so he charged me 2 hrs for about 4 different items. I know you have to remove the ashtray, ski slope and the shifter surround. It shouldn't be more than an hr or two.
