Well Sparkenzap, I've been driving her around for a couple of days and so far so good (fingers crossed, eyes towards the sky). No stall, or stumble. I have ordered the coil gaskets, CPS, fuel and air filter, and coil cover gasket. I wasn't 100% on the CPS, but I figured I might as well go ahead. I will do the work next weekend. Looks pretty straight forward and should go smoothly. Judging by my mileage (14 mpg--mostly city) and the contents of my tail pipe plus my past error codes I may be looking at some o2 sensors next. I'll see what happens--thanks for the help======Scott

Default Newby question about resetting codes

How do you reset the codes after changing a bad coil?
Also what scanner would you recommend?

Thanks

The craftsman scanner I mentioned in my first post has worked really well for me. It gives you the ability to clear errors from the ECU which will turn off any dash lights. There are cheaper scanners out there I'm sure. Check to see which type of data system your car uses. I know for mine it is ISO 9141, I don't know if Jag stayed with that through 1999--there is a good chance they did as toyota and volvo use the same one--pretty much european and asian brands. Good luck.

Default decent cheap scanner

I just bought an Actron CP1925 scanner at AutoZone for 49 bucks with a 10.00 rebate.

It scans the codes and has a cd that allows you to search the codes it pulls. Not bad for an inexpensive scanner.

It worked to check my daughters Sebring and reset the engine light.

Just an FYI .. These "Sears" scanners appear to be Innova scanners, re-branded.

I bought this one a couple weeks ago - on eBay.

It comes with a CD full of software. It read the codes, and I was able to reset them. I am pretty happy with the pieces at $16.

There is live monitoring, but I haven't jumped into that yet.

I just replaced the EGR on my 1996 XJ6 ... disconnecting the battery did not reset the error codes, so I went out and bought this scanner on sale for US$59.00 at Harbor Freight:

Simple, (yet effective) generic scanner from Harbor Freight

It reported two codes set on my car ... one for the EGR and one for "cylinder 3 misfire". The scanner provides the ability to clear the codes, so I gave it a go ... cleared the codes and the CEL is now off on the dash.

No doubt the #3 coil is going out ... i recently went to check the plugs and when i removed #3 coil and looked down at the spark plug, the well was full of oil (#4 and #5 had a tad bit of oil too). I had to replace the valve cover gasket and each of the 6 valve cover spark plug well gaskets.
