New speakers 97 xj6

I just fitted 5.25 . They fit without any modifications but I believe 6" are the original size. Since this is a rare size some go for "6.5 but they might require slight modifications. I would definitely go for 6.5 as I think 5.25 had very little bass. I think rockford fosgate have a "6 speaker though.. good luck

I've fitted (8) on 2 cars: 6.5" from Crutchfield, complete with pigtail so no modifications necessary whatsoever. OEM Speaker grills retained. Most recent fitment had premium sound with tweeters in the rear doors, wired parallel to the speaker. New speakers had integral tweeter so I just removed the OEM tweeters (I was afraid they may rattle) rather than try to solder the wires to the new speakers.

So.. I removed my 5.25' speakers and installed 6.5
They seemed to fit without any issues but I noticed after a while that it was actually too tight. The outer speaker bass membrane was in contact with the rim and it created a crackle sound at certain bass frequencies. Extremely annoying so I opened up everything again and added some spacers to lift the speaker away from the rim. They sound very good now. A whole lot better than the 5,25's. Finally a little bit of bass.
Just a heads up, if you want 6.5' , unless you've installed lots of car stereo before, and know how to do this properly 😊

6.5" with holes that line up, re-use the original speaker grills and come with pig-tails for a plug-n-play wiring solution are easily obtained from Crutchfield's. The only caveat is that after you remove the door panel from the door, you need to remove the inner panel from trim panel to get the 6.5" in-place. This activity is not required to remove the original speaker from its mooring.

Sorry Don, even though it's only a month ago...I thought I'd put such info in Post #3. Memory is just simply shot, I guess. Here's what I fit to the 96 with Premium Sound:
Speakers:

Pigtail:

A few years ago, I fit the Kicker DS60 to my 95 sans premium sound. Not sure if its the extra power of the amp, but the KS seem to sound better than the DS's.
But if you go to their site and enter the vehicle, you'll see they list a range of speakers from "Memphis Audio" and "Kicker" from $39.99/pr up to $229.99/pr with fitment notes. This is for 96 XJ-6: https://www.crutchfield.com/g_400/Al...tml?tp=105&l=C
