OBD Scanner

OBD Scanner
I wonder if anyone has any experience of OBD scanners. What would be regarded as a decent one that would suit my (european) 1997 x300. I believe OBD 2 is needed for this? Also, is it worth the expense if I have a list of the various codes and their meanings. Would the scanner do anything much for me that I dont already have access to? I was looking at an ELM 327 OBD 2 on ebay that seemed very good value for money, complete with assorted software etc. Although I have also read that these models are open to cloning and duplication with many sub standard models available, that aren't all that they claim. Any thoughts or input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Many thanks h20boy, The list of reccomendations is very worthwhile, but I dont see anything that specifically applies to my 1997 xj6/x300. I noticed when reading up on various scanners that they say they are compliant with post 1996 cars, so I presume my early 1997 falls into this category? So far the Innova 3130 and the Elm 327 seem to be front runners in my estimation. Does anybody have any actual experience of using either of these on the x300?
Many thanks again, such a pleasure to be able to short circuit the minefield!!
