Oil catch can - Good or bad idea on x300?
#22
Hey tony, No after reading the feedback on how your Jag performed with the restrictor, I decided to leave it out I couldn't really see the point of it either and reasoned that if it was designed to be fitted on the air inlet side of the separator and not the crankcase side it may serve some purpose in directing most of the air/gases out to the catch can. But decided not to test any theories.

The OEM kits without the dipstick seem pretty cheap when the come up for sale.
But again, not really a big deal. One can just rig up a simple catch bottle/can under the drain tube.

There are a few of the complete JLM20709 kits with the modified dipsticks running around on eBay UK now.
I wonder though if a generic but purpose designed separator works better than the JLM20709 retrofit part from Jaguar though. Some report that the Jaguar JLM20709 separator plastic body itself tends to break and come apart, and it clearly isn't capable of being opened and having its separator element cleaned. Further, one has no visibility into how much oil it is pulling out. With catch cans or clear bodied separators, one can at least see if it is working and how much.

Yep, was looking at those catch cans like yours.
BTW, is the one you used just an empty can, or is there some sort of 'baffle' in those to help the oil accumulate and drain? I've seen them on eBay but they never seem to have photos of the interior of the can.
I was looking at this one from Jegs model 52205, inexpensive at less than $50, small and one can see the oil accumulate:

And many of the reviews of those that converted the air compressor separators mentioned that the filter dissolved or turned mushy from the oil since it wasn't made for that, so they had to use something else. So with all that in mind, I think I'll get a separator specifically made for oil and vacuum that already is built to be mounted in the car, etc. for just a bit more $$
