Default oil consumption

so my x300 is eating pretty much oil.
1 quart every 1000mi.
It did not happen before with blend oil. I did put Mobil 1 and oil is going somewhere... it's not smoking from the exhaust though.
Any hints ?

Run a different grade and brand and see what it does.

Run the heaviest grade spec'd for your conditions. (In the manual)

Mobil themselves sell an older car formula:

https://mobiloil.com/en/article/car-...eage-motor-oil

I think if you search mobile one oil consumption you will see lots of stories about this. Something light is boiling/burning off the initial fill.

What weight are you running?

I'm assuming you've looked under the car, especially at the oil pan?

My car certainly needs a new gasket. It's pretty wet.

I was losing a lot more oil at the oil cooler hoses. I removed them and replaced them with a bypass. You'll need some replacement o-rings though.

The Jaguar dealer I worked at used bulk Mobil 15W40 for all Straight 6 and V12 engines.

I use that or 20W50.

Long stroke 6 cylinder engines will drink the thinner stuff.

My 95 VDP consumed a lot of oil when I put 10w-30 in it.
I've now commonized everything on the Rotella T6 5w-40 I'd always used in the diesel Excursion.
VDP doesn't use much any more.

As an added benefit of running heaviest oil you will get a much more sonically pleasant start up experience as the cam chain tensioners work much better.

When I bought mine it has super thin oil and I was sure I was going to have to do tensioners. Put real oil in it and viola' no more noise.

Agreed on the heavier weight oil.

I experimented with lighter weight oil like 10w-40 and Mobil 1 0w-40, but they tended to burn off and also contribute to startup tensioner clatter. With the thinner oils I might lose a couple or three quarts over an oil change interval, and I have no leaks.

After talking with an "old timer" Jaguar mechanic, he said to use 20w-50 year round in our region, and use the Jaguar filter.

He said that Jaguar switched to the lighter oils with the X300 to help with corporate fuel economy, but the spec on the engines really hadn't changed up to and including the AJ16 and the old engines had always been spec'd for 20w-50.

In addition, while it probably sounded like he was singing the company tune, he said his experience with startup tensioner clatter was often associated with not using the Jaguar filter. His theory was that the capacity and backflow valve must be spec'd differently than the generic aftermarket.

One could probably get away with thinner oil in sub freezing weather, but I'm a fan of the 20w-50 for anything above.

I am using Mobil1 10W40 full sinth.
Anyway I would like something which can hold higher temperatures since summer in California can be hot especially if you cross the desert.
any hints on full synth oil other than what I Am using ?

I've been using non-synthetic Castrol 20-50 since I bought the car in 2000 and never had a problem. I use it all seasons in New England

5W-40? Did you mean 15W-40?

I see that most 15W40 oils are intended, or at least marketed to be used in diesels, including the Rotella T6. So that oil works well in the AJ16 then, and is "within spec?"

Nope. 15W-40 is what used to be called simply Rotella T - the dino version. I think they have since bestowed a number on it, either T-4 or T-5?
T-6 is their synthetic blend of the the same application and is, indeed 5W-40.
It is marketed as a heavy duty diesel oil, but is actually dual-spec and meets the following:
API CJ-4, CI-4 PLUS, CI-4, CH-4, SM, SL, SH; ACEA E9; Caterpillar
ECF-3, ECF-2; Cummins CES 20081; DDC 93K218; Ford WSS
M2C171-E; JASO DH-2, MA; Mack EO-O Premium Plus; MB Approval
228.31; Volvo VDS-4

according to
https://rotella.shell.com/products/t...6-brochure.pdf

My X300 Vehicle care manual urges me to look for the symbol "API SG/CD" and then says take SH where available.
The bar for 5W-40 in the vehicle care's viscosity chart extends all the way across the temperature range.

As an added bonus, it is the cheapest synthetic I've found, and generally readily available at Walmart. I suppose the massive population of full-size diesel pickups registered here in N. TX probably helps drive that availability. Your mileage may vary.

the only Full Synth oil I could find on my local auto parts store is Mobil 15W50.
Would it be a good alternative to 20W50 full synth ?
otherwise there is Castrol GTX 20W50 not full synth, the one I used on my xj6 series 3,
but it is not one of the recommended oil by Castrol for a xj6 x300. At the moment i have 10W40 and the engine is eating too much oil.

Should i go for Mobil1 full synth 15W50 or Castrol GTX 15W50 for my imminent oil change ?

It appears to me that you are attempting to base your oil choice on your engines oil consumption, which is possibly due to mechanical issues (ie wear)
Yes, thick oil 50 (Penrite here in Australia have a 20W/60) may mask these issues however you should normally be guided by the oil chart posted in a previous post.
Remember that the W rating (ie 5W, 10W, 20W) has nothing to do with driving across deserts in 40c (centigrade) heat, it is the cold start viscosity, The second viscosity number (20W/50) is the one to deal with the heat as presented on the chart.
Most synthetics of course do deal with heat much better however which brings us to another subject, viscosity index which may show that not all oils are equal.

well the car has only 77000mi. And started consuming oil after using the full synth Mobil1. So I am just trying to understand what is the next best option. I do not want to spend $$$ addressing other issues. I do not see any leak related to oil neither I see any strange smoking from the mufflers.
There may be a little valve cover gasket leak but it is not enough to explain the oil consumption. I just ask if Mobil1 15W50 could be ok for the AJ16 engine to try it out.

Either the Mobil or the Castrol should work. Although I'm surprised you're using that much oil, my VDP never used that much.

Yeah I can't really explain. I would not want the mechanic who sold me the car tricked me in some way. He did a oil change and the oil level was a lot above maximum, which is not really good. Perhaps this is why I never noticed the problem. The next oil change I put the oil right to the max level. And I noticed it getting lower over time. I think in 5000mi I put 2 quarts of oil to refill.
