Default P0401 EGR Code

Hi Chaps

Can anyone help out a newbie here?
I have a P0401 code on my 97 I6 DB7.
I'm hoping this issue my be as simple as a bad vacuum line or possibly a clogged EGR valve.
My question is, can anyone advise on what I should try next to rectify the problem? Also (rather embarrassingly!) can anyone tell me where the valve and vac lines are?
Please accept my apologies if this subject has been done to death! I did search but could only find a couple of posts relation to V8 cars...
Any help, ideas, advice would be very much appreciated!

Thanks in advance...

I'm new new as well but I can tell you that the egr valve is on the back of the rear exhaust manifold. Th line for it runs from it to the underside of the throttle body. I'm sure others will be able to help more.

Really old thread but I thought I'd try and find out the skinny on the P0401 code on my '96. XJ6. I used the code as the search as I know multiple words just give you only and each word. So I don't need to read every "exhaust" post.

Didn't see any links in the sticky either.

So what is the first thing to isolate the problem I assume is with the EGR? I'll subscribe to my post and TIA

BTW, that is my only code and I've had a CEL for awhile that I have ignored. Just being truthful. Runs and idles as good as ever and I mean really sweet.

I would start by replacing the EGR Valve. I've had this come up before on my 1996 XJS. A new EGR resolved the problem. It's easy to get to, and simple to replace.

I can't recall if the gasket comes with the EGR Valve, but I would certainly replace that too, even if I had to order that separately.

Some people report luck with cleaning these things, but at almost 30 years old, I suspect you've gotten your money out of it.

Thank you. I priced these and they are all over the place. Any recommendations? I think I saw that the gasket was available separately so that tells me something.

To be honest, this one is such an easy to replace item, that I think going cheap isn’t a costly gamble.

But I would order the gasket.

Right, thank you. However the cost range from 400+ down to 100 thereabouts is something to wonder about. I was just looking for a recommendation. My XJ6 is unfortunately not a queen by any stretch. Been a great car but the cost of refurbishing with paint and upholstery is silly. I'll be letting it go for parts soon. Therefore, cost is a matter here.

Buy the cheapest new EGR you can find.

The only brand names I’m aware of that still make this EGR is Standard.
