Default Price to Replace entire stereo system ?

I was wondering what people paid or if they just did it themselves to replace the stereo systems?

I paid $750 for the install (the cables/wiring/sound dampening are part of that price).
That included: stereo, amp, removing old sub and all speakers, installing subs, mids in the doors and tweets in the pillars.
They did a good job, I was happy with the price and the results.

You mean replace with aftermarket stuff? The price will surely depend on the specs of the replacement. I'm currently replacing my head unit, and trying to decide whether to replace the speakers too...

I replaced the 4 door speakers with Alpine speakers and paid nearly $150 for all 4, but I already had the wiring necessary to do it all, so I didn't factor that in. I had heard that the tweeters don't go bad as quickly as the door speakers, but I didn't bother checking them because it all sounds fine. I kept the head unit the same because I really like that stock look, and didn't bother installing a sub (I don't have the HK sound system and didn't want to do all that work).

That $750 doesn't include speakers, amp or head unit. That would add about $2500...

If you're a real music lover, maybe not ! :-)

Too rich for my blood, though.

Now I don't feel so bad about blowing $50 for a good used OEM radio that might give up the ghost at any given moment !

Cheers

Yeah I am a geek. Most sensible humans wouldn't care about the things I worry about. :-)
Two good mids with built in tweeters, an inexpensive sub woofer and a reasonable head unit will probably satisfy most folks needs.

Spend the most on the Mids/tweets, don't worry too much about the sub quality.

$200 for the head unit, $150 for the mids and $75 for the sub. $425? not too bad. Install you can do with a little research. The aftermarket stereo will fit just fine and doesn't look too bad with out the curved facade.

Im an audiophile myself, but car audio is a bit of a lost cause. These Jags are quiet compared to most of those Jappo tin cans, but still far from a quality listening environment. That's why I'm not spending megabucks on my replacement sound system - I'll save that for my home Hi-Fi.

Hey, we all have our vices :-). I'll spend money on things that have others shaking their heads.

I agree! As someone whose first career was in radio, I certainly appreciate the sound of good music at high volumes, but not in the car (anymore). This radio is crap and the speakers aren't much better (surprised they still work, actually), but my solution was to buy an XM/Sirius unit with casette adapter, hook it up to the vent, and listen to commercial-free music or comedy or alerts while dealing with DC traffic. If I want to crank it, I turn up my iPod at the gym!

How easy is it to get to the door speakers, and what size are they? I am looking to replace mine, and should at least be able to do those myself.

the doors should be 5 1/4. I plan on doing an all alpine system myself and plan to spend 1300-1400 on just parts all labor will be free.
