rod_f,

I believe stock are 5.25, so I might go for same size but we shall see. I plan on replacing head unit with the following harness & fascia mentioned above. Speakers except tweeters will be replaced. I'll keep you posted on that. Should be mid august when I work on this project, much needed maintenance that I am working on at the moment.

Replaced the front main seal, easy as pie except finding the d@mn woodruff key. Had to order from SNG, should be in this coming monday. been waiting almost 2 weeks for the piece lol

But as mentioned Lady P i can send you the headunit once I replace it if you want it.

Cheers

Thanks , The Speakerworks repair kit ordered above was the wrong size and they stated in the phone order before to just return for the correct one once I get to it . This provides you with a cheaper speaker option as the rest of the original speaker is OK

By not illuminating are you referring to the pixel segments for the numbers ( common ) or the green background light surrounding the pixels as the rectangle shape glass " ghost " : over ?

I'm curious about the available depth for the bass driver- that probably restricts the number of suitable speakers

Yes rhe woofer on the hat shelf has a limited height so people replace the surround foam not to be confused with the mounting foam

See video . .

Hi thanks for your reply. Basically I've got two XJ6's and the low mileage Topaz is almost mint, except for the radio. The two faults were, the station illumination light and other panel lights do not light at all. The car had no cd player, so I tried known working unit in the trunk. Nothing at all. Pulled out the consul and tried another known good radio. Lights work and dim with another radio with all functions. Cd in trunk works as well, Just not with original radio. Swapped every part around and with the newish radio cannot get lights or cd to function. It's front panel works with other radios, so by elimination it has to be the mainboard in the radio. Suspect an IC somewhere. Thanks ever so for you help and response.

I changed my mind ...
the replacement radios I have seen were all far too shiny and simply too modern ... for my taste at least.
That's why I decided to have the radio repaired by Jes Sheasby in the UK. He replaced the on/off Volume switch which was broken, did an LED conversion, added an additionl AUX jack input socket at the rear of the radion and resoldered all of the connections that are known to cause problems. Jes has done a fantastic job and I am happy to have still the original radion ... now even with the possibility to play spotify from my mobile.

If you remove the circuit board the switch is soldiered and a cell phone repair shop would have the skill sets to replace it .

Hi, we purchased a used 1996 xj6 a couple months back and are going over and repairing the issues the vehicle presently has. The radio encoder is dirty and not operating properly. I can solder in a new one, but I don't want to remove the radio until I have the the correct part. Has anybody ordered and can verify what new encoder I should get? The radio we have is just a radio/cassette and does not have a CD player or sub-woofer. So I guess it's the standard package (Harman Kardon?). Also, does anybody know what the output power (watts) this unit puts out?

The stereo is a Alpine unit as a AJ9500 and the final output stage amplifiers are 2 X Toshiba TA8221 or 4 X 25 watts per channel on the standard non premium option .

See doc below :

The 20 yer old speaker foam between the cone and the speaker frame is garetied to have deteriorated to dust giving lousy sound and this foam can be replaced using the original speakers . This foam is different then the mounting foam which is also deteriorated

You can add a line in to the AJ9500 to play any devise and this is different then a inferior sounding cassette adapter .

Thanks for the reply. So the standard radio/cassette we have is an alpine unit. Was there consensus on which speaker rebuild kit would work? We have the Philips 4140BA speakers and as mentioned quite often, the foam surrounds are completely gone.

Thanks,

Bobby

I'm still corresponding with the speakerworks people to get the correct size kit

One option you might consider is getting the woofer out of a X300 or X308 and putting in a crossover network in it to drive

That was going to be an upcoming question. I see the cutout for the subwoofer. Any specs available for its size? It looks oblong, like a 6x9, but cannet tell fot sure.

From my reading from others the 6 X 9 woofer speaker is limited in how tall it can be . Others have looked for a new aftermarket replacement for the original .

I went to the salvage yard to retrieve one to modify my standard stereo option . The speaker was never installed on this donor 95 VDP so will pull one from a X308 as I don't believe there will be a issue in it's usage

Since the speaker wires come from the front of the car on the standard option vs. from the trunk amplifier on the premium I ran some dedicated woofer wires though the plastic molding in the ceiling . This means the crossover is mounted near the stereo head up front . The woofer wires need to be heavy gauge for voltage loss on heavy beats . Have a stand alone woofer speaker box sitting in the rear seat with wire exiting from under the seat pan at the rear for now with quick disconnects as the dedicated woofer wires continue on to the trunk to be moved to that position when needed .

Back to your original question on encoder part # have you verified the 3 fuses for the stereo are good ?

Yes, the fuses appear to be fine. I should have said earlier.... The radio plays but the volume knob is eratic. So I thoughtI'd look into replacing it. I'm also wieghing the possibility of dropping in a newer radio instead, as that would also come with sub line outs and a clock (this clock is dead). On the diagram above there is a speed input? Any idea what that's for? Also, there are 3 batt connections. I'm guessing one is direct to the batt and one is from the ignition key switch. What might the third one be for?

Thanks,

Bobby

NOTE: Apologies, I found the answer to my above BATT question already stated In This Thread.

Both audio receiver and speaker now a day are ten fold better than the original 1996 head units. New unit is equipped with blue tooth and USB connector cost mere $70.00. The head unit background light can be adjust to match Jaguar turquoise color. I have three original cassette head units in my garage. I actually cut and modified the front plate from the original head and used it dash face plate instead pf paying hefty price of $60 for a piece of plastic. The broken tabs can easily be fixed with some epoxy glue and left over plastic. PNP harness is readily available without any installation difficulty.

Volume is speed-sensitive.

Thanks so much! Never heard of this before (living under a rock I guess). Does it get louder or softer with speed?

Louder with higher speed

The 3rd fuse is for the power antennae extend and will have to get a trigger from the trunk fuse box " king " relay as it is triggered on with the key switch . This if a substitution head unit does not have this feature .

There is a provision for a power amplifier fuse in the trunk but the speaker wires come from the front head unit on the non premium option

Keep asking questions

Haven't seen the particulars in the specs, but recall audible volume increases about 35 mph and again about 70. Think there's another one prior to 35, but not sure. seems more of a step function than a linear increase.
