Question Radio replacement XJR6 (X300) 1996

I would like to replace the original stereo in my 1996 XJR6.
Thanks to some really helpful posts here I managed to dismantle the middle console to take out the radio without any problems and without further damage.
As almost usual a second issue came up while trying to fix the first one: The plastic frame holding the radio the clock and the AC control above had to be replaced as well because all the the brackets were broken.
Obviously some previous owner tried a quick fix with glue and some other materials.

As the radio is dead and out now I would like to replace it by a "modern one" with bluetooth or connector for my android device (Spotify).
The Car audio shops I have visited are doing hard to recommend a suitable stereo witoud any negative impact on other electric systems on board.

Can anybody in this community give me a good advise for a replacment? Radio should match with Europe standards.

The key comes down to whether or not you have the premium sound system. If so, you will see a solitary speaker grill on the rear shelf for the sub-woofer and find an amplifier mounted in the boot alongside the CD changer. If this is the case, here is one way to do it:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...uccess-195845/

If not, you'll just need the AutoLeads harness and fascia and you won't have to mess with the 6-pin connector.

Many thanks! I don't have the premium sound system, so I understand with the fascia, the model specific harness and a 1Din Stereo it's a kinda plug and play.
Best regards from Switzerland

aholbro1,

can you confirm it would be this harness & fascia? Just double checking before purchase

Jacklynthejag ,

Good find . \

This will be the pin / stereo head side of the connector which you will need to adapt over to a new head . Can't say for the other side of the adapter going into your new head . Verify that you have the 8 speaker wires in your original installation and this will work if you have the standard stereo wiring setup . If you have the premium stereo setup with the same AJ9500A head you will have the round tan multi pin connector to the trunk mounted final amplifier where to speaker wires come from the trunk .

Their application guide should cover from 94.5 year X300

If you are going to throw away your AJ9500A original head let me know .

Have you cheaply repaired your original speakers yet as the speaker cone surround material disintegrates over 20 years and sound terrible ?

Lady P,

I know for sure that I do not have the premium audio. The reason I am getting new head unit is because the current one no longer works. It stays on all the time while none of the buttons work.

All my speakers have gone out except the drivers side, which sounds ehh... so I will be replacing the speakers on all doors.

Lady P. would you happen to have a source and or part# for the off on switch for the premium head unit. I sprayed some contact cleaner on the shaft of the switch and got the radio to work again for about 3 to 4 months but it died again and I think the culprit is a worn out switch. I have a hunch that a lot of the problems with these radios is the main switch has dirty contacts or is worn out. I have read about a lot of problems with the radio is that you cannot turn it off or on or you cannot control the volume any more, these are all functions of this switch.

Those are the two part numbers I bought and they worked out just fine on my 96.

Never got to the exact matching to the correct part # as mine was not broken so it was more of curiosity months ago . I was wrong yesterday as it is called a encoder and I think it's in the EC 11 series like the 2 linked below . The shaft height and thickness as well as the slotted shaft are considerations . The original is a 30 detente as you rotate the shaft 360 degrees .Shaft diameter is 4.7 mm or 3/16 inch . Shaft height 11 mm .

https://www.alps.com/prod/info/E/PDF...coder/EC11.pdf See page 12

If you remove the circuit board the switch is soldiered and a cell phone repair shop would have the skill sets to replace it .

# 1 / 25 amp Trunk fuse box for the amplifier

# 10 / 5 amp Trunk fuse box

# 8 / 15 amp Trunk fuse box

And for the lights ..................# 2 / 10 amp LH heelboard fuse box . Pin 13 of the stereo head connector is a dedicated ground for the stereo light and is grounded nearby . The power for the lights comes through the dimmer control module at the stereo head connector pin both 3 and 4 for power which can be put in override by the small rotatory switch on the steering column .

From what I can tell the CD changer is powered by the stereo head unit and has a history of going bad

Thank you so much for your reply. The radio is out of a low mileage 96 60k. No matter what parts of the radio I've changed, I can't get the radio illumination working, so until now, I've suspected the main board. Will let you know what happens. I have four radio's in pieces and have replaced ear of wheat lights. Will try replacing power IC's to see if any others can be coaxed in to life. Thanks again.

Verify the power on pin 3 and 4 and a goog ground on 13 .

You can power up the stereo lights with a 9 volt battery on pin 3 or 4 and 13 , polarity should not matter in this case . It won't be as bright as the car battery but verify's things .

There was something about the micro pin connector between the main circuit board and the face circuit boarrt .

If you need a used 95 x300 CD Changer there is one in KC but can't verify that it will work as mine is the setup without the CD so mine does not have the needed tan 6 pin cable .in my car .

Thanks you for your help. I've another XJ6 and have tried the working cd in the Gold XJ6 and it's still dead. Putting another radio into the gold car and all things work, so I'm fairly certain its the main board. I've also changed the front fascia panel and it still doesn't function. A great shame as it's almost new looking. Thanks again for your help.

I would be interested in which speakers you get to fit, assuming you don't put new surrounds in the old ones.
I replaced the radio in mine a while back and wonder if the sound could be improved.
