OK, you are up there and the specs we get down here sometimes do not transfer to your market, BUT, here goes.

Castrol Australia lists:

EPX 80W90, for NON LSD units.

LSX90 for LSD units.

Now being that the USA NEVER got thw mighty 3.2ltr engine, and my info indicates that the 4ltr cars ALL got LSD, I would go with the LSD oil.

Also down here, MOST gear oils are now LSD compatible, coz LSD oil will NOT harm a non LSD diff, but non-LSD oil, can reek havoc with a LSD diff. Good old Aussie common sense haha.

I use 80/90 weight...whatever name brand is on sale that day. Shell, Valvoline, whatever.

I think it's the first time ever but I have to disagree with Grant. The only X300s with limited slip as standard issue were the XJRs. Those aside I think few USA cars ever had it.

Cheers

Thanks Doug. I was just not sure on LSD in the later cars.

Our '88 XJ40 3.6ltr had LSD, so I thought the big engine X300's would follow, obviously something else such as "traction control", took its place.

The 3.2ltr no got traction control, not enough Mumbo to need it.

Yes, drain plug on the bottom. The filler plug is on the rear cover, right of center, about 1/3 up from the bottom.

Don't drain the oil unless you're sure you can remove the filler plug :-)

This is out of the Vehicle Care Manual (though it's not specifically stated for my 1996 year model - it's probably applicable to all x300 year models), Page 33:

Rear axle:
Refill - Spec: API GL5; SAE Visc: EP 90; Comments: Use only Shell Spirax Super 90

Top up only - Spec: API GL5; SAE Visc: EP 90; Comments: Alternative brands may be used when Shell Spirax is not available.
