Recurring P0430 Code
I have a 1996 XJ6 with 67k miles. I've been getting recurring P0430 codes, even after my boyfriend reset them with a code reader after cleaning the contacts for the two upstream 02 sensors and torquing them to specs. One sensor was loose. It worked fine for a week, but the code is back on again
My question is what side is the P0430 code for both the "upstream and downstream" sensors located on, is it the driver's or passenger side?
Strangely, I just passed smog. Do these readings look like a bad cat?
C02 = 14.9
HC = 19
C0 = 0.03
Thanks

Tracy, the code you list is for bank #2. In the case of your vehicle, that would be the sensors associated with the back 3 cylinders (cylinders 4-6) or the exhaust pipe nearest the firewall (same pipe, different way of finding it). So, odds are, you may need to replace the upstream O2 sensor (the one nearest the engine) and see if that fixes your problem. Based on the fact that your car just passed emissions and you are not complaining about a rotten egg smell, odds are your catalytic converter is just fine.
If you need more info, just hollar.

Tracy, you got lucky when you passed smog. That p0430 code is a catalyst effeciency code, meaning the catalyst material is compromised and the downstream 02 sensor is doing it's job, along with the upstream sensor notifying the ECM of the catalyst ineffeciency. This code is very common on your model with higher miles, say over 60k like yours. If you can hook a datastream tool to the car, the downstream 02 sensor should read .5v approx. and not fluctuate. If it does fluctuate say from .1v to 1v, the catalyst needs replacement. Do this when the engine is at running temp. I'd bet you need that cat replaced based on miles and that code. Good luck.
