Default Rough idling on XJ 3.2 '95

Hi there,

It have been a long time ago for me since I have post something here.
My car was running excellent for all these years without little maintenance.

However the time has come the Jag is starting to show some issues and I have no idea where to look.

Problem 1: rattle at 1500-2000 RPM, the rattle comes from the upper chain tentioner. I believe this would be just a swap with a new one?

Problem 2: I will try to describe this as accurate as I can. I was driving on a normal road with traffic and my engine stalled. I couldnt start her after this and I had to roll her to the side

When cranking she was trying to come alive, but she couldnt. After opening the door, closing it and opening it again with my remote control from the key, I tried to crank the engine again and she start again while having some issues to stay at the right RPM.

Some days later the same happened, I tried the same trick with closing and opening the locks with remote and that did work, she fired right up. Allthough pretty rough idling.

To this day I have not had a stalling engine while driving, but I encountered other strange behaviours. Most of the time in the morning when cold she would drive fine until parked and start again. Very rough idling, playing with my gas pedal fixed this and she runs fine after a couple 100 meter.

When this occurs, I have a dead spot with power at 1000-1300 rpm.
I can hold my power at this level and i hear that the engine is fluctuating.
When I press the pedal deeper, she goes out of this hickup and revs right up.

When i drive a bit more agressively i notice that she hickups in the higher power band.

She starts smoking white fumes when this happens, and I'm smelling sulfur.

This occurs daily now.

Where do I start to look?

Regards, Maraud

Given the recent posts, but nothing else to corroborate it, I'd give some thought to a crank position sensor change. It couldn't hurt to have a spare one, anyway. Might also clean & tighten your engine ground strap. You may want to review some posts regarding the coolant temp sensor as well.

I add what I have found with mine.

TPS is full of oily gunk, it runs down the throttle shaft, thanks to gravity, and enters the TPS and screws the signal. Some respond well to cleaning with solvent in a p/pack can, some dont, mine did.

The inner bore of the throttle body is FULL of black goo, thus screwing the air bleed and other things. I clean this at every oil change, coz I remove the oil filter from the top, so that trunking elbow is OFF for access, and a quick wipe out with a solvent soaked rag is so easy.

Not sure if Holland has an EGR system, the USA does, and that valving system gets clogged and reeks havoc with stable engine running, mainly at idle and close to it.

As for the locking and unlocking kind of sorting it, dunno.
