squeeky steering, steering adjustments and AC problems
Dear All,
i have the problem that the steering of my '95 XJR is a bit squeeky, certainly when the car has just started. any idea where to look for root causes? seems that something is wourn out and should be fixed before getting worse.
also, anyone has some pointers what and how things should be alinged and adjusted? i have some vibrations around 90 Km/hrs.
as a last one, when turning on my A/C ( which has not ran for some time ), after 5 minutes i had an very loud noise coming from under the hood and i lost all power of the steering. i smelled some burned belt sent, so i switched the A/C off and i could move one. so probably a blocked AC pump? i was suprised how that could disable the car all of a sudden.
thank you for the replies, much appreciated from a starting jag DYI mecanic

Ok first things first.
1. Squeeky steering, next time try to listen where thr squeek is coming from? (belt or pump or rack?) hot or cold? turn the steering wheel all the way to left then right see if its making any noise. Try changing the fluid it might help, if its the rack or pump.
2. vibration .. umm our car should be very stable at 100km/h. if your car is vibrating badly then you might want to check the wheel bearing, and check if the tire are balanced, inbalanced tire can definetely cause vibration.
3. As for your ac... i was going to ask you is the ac working at all? i actually think maybe the compressor is seized but that would not cause the lost of steering... can you provide more detail interms of where and what kind of noise its making?

Hi Jacky,
your tip regarding the squeeky steering was very usefull. today i changed all the oil of the power steering, replaced it with new one, and the squeeking completely vanished!
regarding my AC and ( slight ) vibration, i will get to that in a few days when i have more time.
thanks a lot for the help.
best regards,
Steven.
