Default Starting problems

I have a 97 xj6. When I turn the key nothing happens no dash lights no turning over no blinkers. The only thing that will work is the fans for the heat and AC. I also have no headlights. I put a new battery in so I know the battery is good. I even put it in my xj8 and it started right up. I have checked fuses. I have power running to all the fuse boxes. The inertia switch is not tripped. So if any one has any suggestions please let me know

Hi Cburden0127,

You may want to repost your question in the X300 forum if your car has a 6-cylinder engine (XJ6) or in the X308 forum if your car has an 8-cylinder engine (XJ8). This is the forum for 2003-2009 X350 (aluminum bodied) XJ8 models, which are substantially different from your '97.

First thing I would try is "jiggling" the gearshift lever to be sure that the ECM knows the gear selector really is in Park. If that doesn't work, try starting the car with the gear selector in Neutral. If it starts, the "Park Neutral" microswitch that tells the ECM the gear selector is in P or N either needs to be cleaned and adjusted or replaced.

Other possibilities off the top of my head are a the ignition switch itself, the gearshift interlock relay, an ignition relay (there may be more than one on your car), a fault in the wiring of the ignition circuit, or a problem with the Body Processor Module or its connector(s). As I mentioned, if you'll post this question in the appropriate forum for your '97, you'll probably get more informed answers from other '97 owners.

Cheers,

Don

I've moved your question from X350 to X300 forum.

Members here with the same model will be able to help.
