Before you were to change out the rack , by replacing the fluid you can get rid off the noise and there are external mounting shims to get rid of the sloop . The outermost internal seals can be changed for a leaking unit very easily yourself without removing the rack . Is your issue other then these 3 ?

There are seal kits to replace all the seals

It's been leaking for years and now the fluid seemingly goes from the reservoir to the garage floor.

the cardone rack at rock auto is 250. Hardly worth the effort to change seals on a 20 year old rack with nearly 200,000 miles on it....

The reservoir has a common leak at one of the lines I can't remember as Lady P was all wet on the right side of the engine . I cut an inch off the hose for better material to clamp on the port . Your eyeballs are on the car and are better able to specify exactly where the leak is but I'm a really cheap guy and this information may be able to save you some money other then changing out the rack .

Pretty common for the non-pressurized hose going from the bottom of the reservoir to the pump to leak for some reason. It's not an expensive one, and although formed, could probably be substituted by a 2-2.5' length of standard hose.

I have read positive reviews of The Rack Doctor out of South Carolina. For a XJ6 the rack is $189.00

Thanks for tip on rack doctor, though I've found some less than stellar reviews. But looks like a lifetime warranty? Rock auto can get me the rack by wednesday for a reasonable shipping rate so I'm inclined to pay a little more if it means i won't have have to rent a car.

And yes, I'm replacing the resevior to pump hose, that's been leaking for a while. I've had it up on a lift so I'm sure the rack is leaking too.

First time ever replacing a rack, so was curious if cardone does a good rebuild.

Center the index mark at the base of the spline shaft input before engaging spline .

So, i ordered a replacement for the leaky rack rockauto sent, installed it and it is stiff. Was going to take it in to a jag tech to see if he could diagnose the stiff steering condition but the replacement for the replacement rack has started leaking. It's been less than 500 miles.

I will now need to order a third rack (under warranty) and pay for a third install or pay someone to rebuild correctly (which I should have done from the beginning). I also replaced the resevior hose and pressure line. 2 for 2 bad rack rebuilds from A-1 Cardone... can't reccomend

Heh, first real problem I've had in 7 years and 80,000 miles and it's a doosy....

The stiff steering condition could be the servo's position could be positioned to the higher speed position controlled by a variable steering control module . It is my position that if you never had that before , the servo in the replacement rack is bad or installed on the rack physically clocked backwards . There my be a procedure to check this before you install the whole rack into the car and the associated cost in time , money , effort , ordering , and such
