Question Steering wheel column vertical movement, how to tighten

I thought there was a thread on this topic a while back, but I can't seem to find it now. So apologies if this is deja vu.

But I've got a minor annoyance that I've experienced on other cars with electrically adjustable steering wheels as well; which is that the wheel can be moved slightly up/down with some minor effort as if something in the mount or adjustable linkage is loose or worn.

This issue is present on my old Buick Riviera, and in that case is due to the two hinge pins on either side of the tilt mechanism having their aluminum bores wallow out over time. There really isn't much of a fix unless you take the whole assembly to a machinist.

With the XJR, the same issue presents itself where the "tilt" function clearly allows minor movement up/down if I lift on the wheel slightly.

Does anyone have any tips on if this is typical, and if it can be fixed by perhaps tightening something?

Tip: Steering wheel is for turning, not for pushing up and down on. Stop it!
All 3 of mine have slight up/down play if forced. Relax Al, you're holding on too tight

When I worked at the dealer I replaced many upper columns for that fault.
I went to the parts dept and got a big box with the NEW column inside, I replaced the old column with the new one!!!!!

No more play in the column!!!!!

What I found with mine ( frozen ) was that the lubricant inside the tilt position sensor worm gear was dried up causing to much drag on the drive motor . You can simply unclip ( no bolts ) the sensor and clean out the old lubricant and refresh with some new thinner spray . You might be able to do this even without removing the dash panels for it is on the very bottom and very forward on the column assembly . In service the lighter spray may dry out and need the be redone . Graphite may short out the sensor if it migrates in ( ? ) . You'll have to clock the sensor before installing it with the use of a jumper lead on the motor so you don't arch and damage the contact " blades " , lots of current . I used a battery charger as a power source . I did see later that there was a TSB to put in a more powerful motor .

Hope this helps , Parker

Heh, no worries, at least you offered some feedback that I could attempt ... ah hem, looking at you guys alhobro1 and bob

... now, if a frozen mechanism were the problem

So, seriously, if a new column fixed the problem, then it was a real issue (not my over sensitivity per se, arguable I guess) so I wonder what is loose/broken? Anyone ever dive into one to see why the play exists? I'd say mine moves by a good 1/8 to 1/4". Not the end of the world, but one of those little things that bugs ya, you know

I have a few 'loose' columns stacked in an old house that I use for storage. I have never tried to disassemble to see why.

I think there was a discussion several years ago but I don't remember the details.
Maybe some oversize bushes????

When I replace my broken reach motor shaft, I'm going to try the same repair. Thanks for the link!
