Suspension knock

Default Suspension knock

Hey,
Could someone name this thing? It causes front suspension knock, can be seen from engine bay right above the wheel.

I think we're looking at the shock absorber bushing and washers

I agree. The parts which need replaced are the isolators, 2 per side, part number MMD2144AA

That's the upper shock mount. My experience after replacing my shocks was that the lower bolts can come loose a bit (perhaps not tightened enough upon install) so check those too.

If you were to change these bushes would you need to employ spring compressors?

No, if I recall (haven't done it yet myself) you can change the front shocks without spring compressors, but you have to take great care to support the bottom spring pan otherwise they could come out violently.

There is a write up here or on Jaglovers if I recall.


I've got to replace my front shock bushings too at some point, but the shocks still seem to be good so I'll just update the bushings and save a lot of $$

You can change the shocks with no issue without removing the spring. Jack the car up and put on a jack stand (I did one side at a time). Then use your jack to ever so slightly release the tension on the bottom bolt and it slides right out. Front shocks on this car have one (if you want to call it that) difficult thing. Jacking up the car and removing the wheel. The rest is super simple. You may need to move your power steering reservoir on the passenger side to get access to top of shock. You also need to be able to tighten the 17mm nuts without allowing the shock shaft to spin. Vise grips work great for that.

I would echo all of the above, this is a relatively straightforward job. On Right hand drive cars, the radiator header tank needs to be removed to access the LHS nut, but not difficult to do.
Whilst in the vicinity, it is worth checking the bottom shock absorber bush too, as it is not unheard of for these to wear, which allows knocking.

Can one change the lower bushing on the car, or does that have to be pressed out/in to the lower wishbone?

Thanks, correct, however the write up doesn't address the bottom bushing that is pressed into the wishbone and how one can get it out and replaced. The write up just shows how to install the shock.

Pretty sure I saw another thread or two on here about replacing the bushing, will have to do some searching eventually

The bushing can be replaced in situ. Use the two-sockets-connected-by-a-bolt method, assisted with a hammer.....
Steer clear of the cheap aftermarket bushes: mine were shredded after 3000 miles, and I had to do the job again, this time with Jag bushes.
