Thermostats
Picking a new thermostat used to be simple. But picking one for my 95 XJ6 has gotten complicated. I went to Rock Auto and reading the description it indicates the thermostat can be controlled by the car computer. That doesn't seem possible looking at that external part of the engine. And at Rock Auto they have about six units for sale.
Folks, I need some thermostat learning as my heater in the car barely works and the indicator needle is not quite on the "N". My wife likes a warm car. Help!

Dayco DT58G.
Conversion to your market should not be an issue.
Rock Auto, whoever they are, are talking crap.
DONT FORGET
The AJ16 engine has a thermostat GASKET. NOT an o/ring. DO NOT screw that up, or wifey will be more upset.

When you say not quite on N what you mean? Is it a mm or two off the center to the left? If its just that then its normal and you should still have heat, if its lets say at quarter of the scale then yeah definitely thermostat but anything over and if you still don't have much heat it will be auxiliary pump that's gone. They all fail eventually, just need a set of new carbon brushes.
Thanks for your help.

I wish I had read this yesterday.
Fitted new thermostat today along with temperature sender (single wire one) as the car seemed to be running cold. Temp sender 19mm deep socket - 2 minute job.
Thermostat not so much ....
Thermostat from Mahle came with 2 O rings and confusingly the box was marked Mercedes Benz. Double checked and it was the correct one. Remove housing, no O ring in there, however there was a metal gasket on the housing. Removed this and could see a trace of some kind of sealer/rubber on it. It was clear to me (and I have now read some horror stories) that the O rings were not for use on this car so thankfully I didn't go down the road of breaking my thermostat housing. Initially I thought okay I'll just put the new stat straight in, put the gasket back on the same way around and see how that works.
Drip drip drip ....
So then against my experience and intuition I and needing to be somewhere else I formed the incorrect assumption that the trace of rubber/sealer on the metal gasket must have been some kind of liquid gasket material. So I took it to bits again, cleaned both mating faces and both faces of the metal gasket, put some high-temp gasket sealer on both faces and sandwiched the metal gasket between. Tightened it up.
Drip formed very slowly but surely
Just order the new gasket that I can see has a small rubber seal on it.
So now I have to do the job again. And pay attention to the stat being the right way up .....
I am not too concerned about any after affects. The drip is so slow I will use the car this week until new gasket arrives and I was careful not to get any of it too close to inner edge so I don't think I will have anything in the cooling system.
BUT - just goes to show. Simple job but research it first. Still thankful I didn't try and wedge an O ring into place and break the housing at least!!!

Just as a follow up to this. My dripping stopped 24 hours after I reused the old gasket (by now simply a thin flat piece of metal) with instant gasket either side of it. No issues at all with the car.
The new gasket (reference is in a reply above from another member) arrived a week later. It had an indented ridge around it and was covered in a thin "rubbery" material. Removed the housing and stat again. Spent a while peeling off part cured and part soft instant gasket material. Fitted now gasket and stat correct way up. Tightened down. As you get to the end of the threads you can "feel" the gasket ridge deform. At this point I did one turn on each bolt progressively until comfortably tight using a small 1/2inch ratchet (in my experience thats about 20nm!). Refilled coolant and perfect not a drip from the word go.
Moral of this story is a) do not fit O rings just because they come with a part - look at whats already there and 2) even the easiest of jobs like this is better done after doing just a little research.
