Default trans. fluid

Hey folks-

Quick question if you don't mind, what transmission fluid would you recommend for a fluid replacement in my 1996 xj6 4.0litre. I have about 107k miles on it, I was thinking about adding theLucas transmission additive to the fluid as well, has anyone used this before, is it safe for this transmission? I have used the Lucas trans. before, I just wondered if anyone has had experience with thisadditive in our transmissions. Thanks guys, I appreciate it.

I just did a transmission service on my '95 XJR, and i used the lucas additive, but make sure you know how many quarts you need, because the lucas additive makes it impossible to get an accurate reading on the dipstick. I also have a '96 XJ6 and it's been 4 qts every time. As far as fluid type I've always used Castrol Dexron VI.

Use brand name Dexron III fluid. I never use any additive in the trans fluid, too risky.

Does the torque converter have a drain on these cars?

The Lucas additive does work if you want to nurse a tired transmission along. No need to use it on a healthy trans, though.

You probably already know this, but just in case......

To get an accurate reading with the 4L80E you gotta drive it till its really hot....a good 15 miles or so.

And top it off right to the "Max" line on the stick, as per Jag tech bulletin. I had a delayed engagement problem with my '95 XJRwhen the fluid level was simply in the "acceptable" range on the dipstick.

Cheers

yes there is a drain plug on the torque converter and i strongly suggest just use ATF of Dexron III grade without all those additive. to be safe use good brands and sealed bottles.

ah ha this is true but my poor XJR had a rough life with its past owners. Lucas made her feel a little better, but it's still missing something. My '96 has a magnificent responsive feel even being naturally aspirated.
