Whats the difference between the Vanden Plas and normal XJs
Title says it all I think, I tried searching the Googles and this site but couldn't find anything. The only differences I can see is the grille and that chrome thing on the trunk, whatever it's called.
"VanDen Plas" means different things depending on year and market. Pages could be written on the subject. For most non-USA markets the VDP was the top-of-the-line Daimler model. In the USA and Canada the name was used on Jaguars.
In the case of USA cars it means, primarily, upgraded interior trim. Higher grade leather and wood, different seats, picnic trays for the back seat, and other upgrades. Someone here will remember and list them all :-).
The fluted grille and trunk lid "plinth" used to be Daimler exclusives but they eventually made their way to the Jaguar VDPs.
Tray tables and contrasting piping on the seats.
Not sure...but I believe VDP's had their own, unique interior color pallette as well. ie gray XJ interior not equal to gray VDP interior.
Also not entirely sure, but believe all '96-on VDP's were LWB. No LWB available in '95, though Vanden Plas was available.
The VDP's also have a bit of chrome trim on the side molding on the doors and the front fenders.
Some of the VDP's had bench style back seating, while others had bucket seats. I'm not absolutely certain on that though. It could just be the Xj12's that had the bench seats.
Could you please post a photo as I’m really interested to see one.
The Canadian and USA cars had the same fluted grille and trunk finisher as a Daimler model, with the exception of the badge (Jaguar vs Daimler). This a 1995 Canadian market VDP.
I have a ‘96 XJ12 USA model. It’s not a Vanden Plas, has normal smooth grill (with blacked out slats), but has picnic tables, boxwood inlay, and other Vanden Plas like interior trim. They really did mix and match however the marketing department wished!
Jagboi,
That is a great-looking Vanden-Plas. The only reason I am not jealous is that I'm not much for the fluted grille. I like the burled walnut-covered picnic tables. (I wish my X330 had them).
There's something exceedingly elegant about the big Jaguars. It is a quiet, dignified, Anglican, presence rather than a stoic, Aryan statement.
Such a statement sums it up rather nicely, don't you think?
There was a lot of mixing and matching in specs and options. I believe that Rhett bought his Wife a standard wheelbase VDP, so different combinations are out there. There's a lot of extra legroom and headroom in a long wheel base edition. I've got an XJ6L. What I always thought was super luxurious were the sheepskin floor mats. I finally saw some in a wrecking yard car, talk about opulence! Good luck in your search.

I agree, they are elegant cars; especially in jewel tones, like the emerald green, sapphire or burgundy. I like the fluted grille, but that might be because I also have a true Daimler, so I like the family resemblance.
I have a 1996 VDP. I also have the 40+ page dealer brochure. Here is what the brochure says that the VDP has that the basic XJ6 doesn't have.
A few of these features that are included on the Vanden Plas are available as an option on the XJ6,XJ6L
Fluted grill
Chrome side mirror covers
Chrome exterior door handles
Chrome body side moldings
Long wheelbase 117.9" vs 113"
Premium Autolux leather with walnut picnic trays
The leather also has contrasting piping on the seats
Burl Walnut trim with Boxwood inlays
Wood/Leather steering wheel
Lambswool footwell rugs
Passenger front seat adjust from rear
Personalized remote memory activation feature
Integrated garage door/gate opener
Electrochromic interior rear view mirror
3 position memory door mirrors, driver seat and steering column with auto tilt-away feature
Rear seat cigar lighter

VDP's came is a variety of interior colours. Mine was Regatta Blue for example.
From the 1996 Full Line Product Guide, the available interior colours were: Coffee, Cream, Oatmeal and Parchment. Additional colours were available in 1995, both interior and exterior.
