Hi all, I'm thinking about getting a cold air induction kit for my 1996 XJR6 (supercharged). Does anyone make them? Something with a filter and a partition or barrier to avoid sucking in hot air from the engine? Thanks in advance.
If you want a cone filter 'hot air' intake, then lots of places sell kits.
Yes, what I meant was a kit with a cone filter and some sort of barrier to shield or partition to minimise it from sucking in hot air from the engine bay as obviously this would be counterproductive to any benefits a freer flowing filter might offer. Thanks.
I have a K&N intake on mine. I should add that it's by necessity only. If I could have the OE system I would, but my car is an X308 shell with X300 everything else. and the OE filter doesn't fit.
I have spoken to many Jaguar and Foreign car mechanics after they have seen my KNM, and they have told me many times that you will see no performance improvement of any kind to change from the original one that was put on the car. So if you still have the original equipment stay with what you have. Many discussions in this forum go into complete details of why or why not and have shown the lack of performance improvements.
If you have access to a dyno, put in a fresh/new air filter and make a HP/Torque test run.
Install cone filter and tubing kit and make another run and see if there is an improvement.
I guess the 'makes a cool noise' and 'looks cool' are the ultimate deciding factors for these projects?
I doubt you will see a power gain that is worth the money.
Hmmm, good advice here, thanks. Chances are now higher that I'll stick with the stock box/filter.
I just wanted to make a few 'sensible' enhancements to stock and have been thinking about the following:
Andy Bracket
Larger pulleys (maybe just the lower so I can keep the stock belt)
Stainless exhausts right at the back that deletes the back boxes so a bit fruitier and a little freer flowing without going OTT (rest of the exhaust keep standard)
I had a cone filter on mine, it sounded good under load but I was concerned that the MAF could be wobbling around and that the filter might not be cleaning the air as well, plus hot air question. After seeing a dyno plot somewhere, in which someone took the lid of the original filter during some dyno runs and concluded that the intake tube lost a few whp, I put my stock box back on but removed the intake tube and cut out that face of the lid. That gave a much bigger opening, but still closed off the hot side of the box and shielded the paper filter from incoming spray in wet weather etc. Not sure if it gained anything other than a little more induction noise under load, but free and easy to reverse with a replacement lid from the scrapyard.
