Default X300 4.0 Manual not starting

I have trimmed down my collection by one more, the manual XJR has gone. The 4.0 Sport is now sulking!

The car will unlock with the remote but only gives one beep on the sounder (Should be two beeps I think)
The car will lock with the remote and gives one beep on the sounder
Pressing the lock button again gives another single beep but tilt alarm does not activate nor do lights come on with third press just a single beep with each press
Dash lights come on with key in position 2
Engine does not crank & no click from starter solenoid in position 3
Side & headlights do not work at all

The car had been standing for about 3 weeks

Good battery fully charged.

I will disconnect the battery for a while and see if any difference but I don't think that will solve this one.

I suspect possibly security module?
Any thoughts welcome. I have spares of most modules but I assume the security one is linked to the sensor in the column which detects the correct key is being used. Also possibly some reprogramming needed if changing this one??

I have done over 100,000 miles in this car and apart from a few minor problems it has been very reliable. Last long road trip was Beaulieu Autojumble in September 2019.

Thanks
Charlie

I just spent 20 minutes posting an update and my iPad decided to reload the page and I lost everything I had typed. Grrrr!
Thanks to aholbro1 who re-posted 33 links to non start problems. A lot of these relate to J gate inhibit switch problems but there are some really useful pointers there. (My car is 5 speed manual)
I have gone through the 33 links and will do further investigation tomorrow.
I am based in the UK and it is now 21.11.
I broke a 4.0 Sport manual a few years ago so am in the lucky position in having all modules in stock.
Working on the car today lots of water in the foot wells (
The car has a sunroof (
There has been lots of rain here in the UK (
I will hopefully find what has caused the problem and will post updates as the project progresses.

Thanks
Charlie

If you have water in the footwells you may have water in the ECU.

Started to remove ECU today but it still has the security screws holding the metal plate over the multi-pin plugs and the tool I needed wasn't at home! Will get it out tomorrow & check. I used to have water ingress problems here on another car and just left the cover loose so it self drained. Not ideal but it worked for years!

Update: The car now runs.
I checked the engine ECU and good news no corroded pins or water there.
I changed it anyway and in doing so discovered an earth stud had come off the bulkhead just near the re-setable impact switch. This earth wire goes from the stud to the lower bolt holding the engine ECU in place.
Re-attached to a different stud and hoped for success but no!
Fault code came up P1621 which on my very basic code reader indicated "immobiliser" fault.
I changed the body processor module and then things started to work. I had headlights again.
The starter turned but wouldn't engage after several tries the bendix gear broke free and engaged and it started straight away.

The new following faults are now now in evidence
The lock/unlock sequence is still not right although it worked correctly once.
Correct operation is: One press to lock, second press to activate tilt alarm, third press for head lights.
After the second press you get one beep. On unlocking you get two beeps.
Mine has reverted to one beep after any press of either button but it does lock & unlock.

With the ignition on the brake lights are on all the time. (Changed lamp module in boot/trunk, no change)
It isn't the micro switch on the brake pedal, I have checked it.
When inserting the key I get one beep, the same beep sound as if you have left the side lights on.
When pressing the brake pedal with the key out I also get this one beep.

The car is somewhat confused by something.

I have disconnected the battery and have left it until I have some more time.
I have been on it for 6 hours today.

Happy New Year

Charlie

Check the engine ECU sitting behind the vertical plastic panel of the foot well. Rain water may have travelled down to corrode the connectors to the ECU. If confirmed, try locate the source of the leak and fix it or else the problem will recur and there will be no end to this. Read my earlier thread here.

I left a dehumidifier in the car for a week and the strange faults have gone away. No spurious beeps and brake lights working correctly. So good news!

Sorry, I probably did not read all your posts before posting my earlier thread. I was surprised that you had water in the car but it did not cause any damage to the electrical and electronic connections. If the engine is fine now and your worry is about the incorrect beeping signals, it is worth checking the security ECU. Try switching one from a donor car and see if the problems persist.
