Default X300 Brand of transmission

I just read on the JAG LOVERS site that some jags run BORG-WARNER transmissions and others run GENERAL MOTORS transmissions. What brand of transmissions are the 95 -97 X300's running????

The X300s use a "ZF" transmission in the standard 6 cylinder cars. The V12s and supercharged 6 cylinder use the GM "4L80E" transmission.

Jaguar's decades long association with Borg Warner ended with the last of the Ser III XJ6s in April 1987.

Jaguar began using GM transmissions in mid-'77, using the "400" trans behind the V12 engines.

The X300/V12 does use the same trans as the XJR6, yes, but it's the 4L80E, not the 400.....although the 400 and 4L80E are certainly related

I just looked up the brand, model and price of a 96-97 X300 replacement transmission and you are perfectly right. It is a General Motors "ZF" trans price $1,150.00
(THIS IS INCORRECT "ZF" IS NOT A GM PRODUCT)

I'm not so sure the "ZF" is a GM tranny. ZF is a German company that manufactures tranny's, supplying to many automotive manufacturers, mostly to luxury-level manufacturers.

My understanding is that some of the x300 series got the GM 4L80E... some got trannys from ZF. If the tranny designation is an "xHPxx", it's from ZF.

Right.

Normally aspirated 6 cylinders got a ZF trans (two different version-one for the 4.0 and another for the 3.2). V12s and supercharged 6 cylinders got the GM 4L80E

Cheeers

I researched your statement about ZF being a German company and you are right. I stand corrected.

No, the 5-speed autos came in with the X308 although having said that the the X300 3.2/4.0/SC were available as a 5-speed manual (although they are very rare) but it wasn't available on the V12, at least in the UK.

The four speeds ZFs are the 4HP22 and the 4HP24E. The latter is a bit beefed up, and has the electronic ECU (the one that puts it into limp home mode). The former is fully mechanical. You can tell a 4.0/XJR/V12 from a 3.2 by looking for the sport switch under the J-gate - the 3.2 just has a growler logo.

FYI, the Wikipedia page is correct (Jaguar XJ (X300) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). I know, I wrote (bits of) it.

Talking ZF

Hi,

ZF stands for Zahnradfabrik Fiedrichshafen. (Cog factory Friedrichshafen), a 100 % German company.

Had them on the phone (I am German) about my funny filled-for-life 5-speed automatic gearbox on my 2001, XJ8, X-300 (!) gearbox.
I posted something earlier on an oil and filter change for that box.

I think it was an X-300 pre-production run with that @#%$!!!# gearbox. It is rather rare. Proposed Jag lifetime is 100.000 miles, which is utter bovine manure. But the oil and filter have to be changed after 100.000 miles !!

Oil is Esso/Mobil ATF LT 71141. DO NOT USE ANY OTHER BRAND OF OIL !!!

Skype me on Takeo_fr for a complete voice explanation if interested, I am too lazy to type it down here.

Takeo.

My $.02, the GM 4L80E was used with the 6.0 litre V12; the turbo400 was used behind the 5.3 V12. BTW front drive Cadillacs use the 4T80E - T for transverse as used in front wheel drive.

Indeed it was. And with the supercharged 6 cylinder as well

Indeed it was, beginning mid-1977. Prior to that the Borg Warner 12 was used
