X300 intermittent engine stop
I bought a 4.0 Daimler Century last year. Previous owner said occasionally the engine just stopped for no reason. I drove it home & the next day drove to Suffolk & back. Total 300 miles, no problem. I put it down to lack of use! The problem then appeared. Starting from cold left ticking over it would sometimes stop. More alarmingly it would stop at a road junction or roundabout so coasting to a giveaway/yield sign when applying the loud pedal the engine would just stop. Sometimes the revs would just dip to around 500rpm and it would recover. After stopping sometimes the gearbox fault light came up and then it went into limp mode, no top gear, no kick down etc. MOT failed on emissions. MAF sensor changed as I had a spare & it passed. The heater pump failed the other day and to replace one of the mountings I had to remove MAF sensor and plastic inlet duct to the inlet manifold. I discovered the rubber bellows between duct & manifold was damaged/split. I have changed it and although I have only done 120 miles since I think the problem is cured.
Hope this helps someone
Kind regards
Charles
