X300 Sound System Fault
Dear all
Daimler X300 4.0L - sound system issue - I can tune the radio and hear sound although it is very quiet and very crackly - not the sort of noise when the aerial does not work properly but like the amplifyer might be shot ?? Anyone else had similar symptoms and know the cause/cure?
Cheers

Depends whether you had the premium sound system or not. Most didn’t have, but the premium system has an amp in the boot and a small subwoofer in the parcel shelf. All others just use the internal amp in the head unit.
If you have the premium system you will have a final power amplifier on the left side of the trunk ( I believe ) and a CD player under the fwd portion of the trunk cutout
There is a separate fuse for the final power amplifier as well as a couple for the control head
Is fault only on FM operation ?
Does the final power amplifier get warm to the touch after some time ?
Fuse # s ....................
# 1 / 25 amp trunk fuse box - amp
# 8 / 15 amp trunk fuse box
# 10 / 5 amp trunk fuse box , this fuse needs the trunk fuse box relay to close ( swapping option is the left engine bay fuse box relay which in reality only runs your horn )
The # 1 fuse is closest to the terminal post and on same row on the fuse box

Non-premium cars could also have the CD changer. And the amp can sometimes be under the parcel shelf, sometimes at one side.
I'm going to guess that the 22+ year old head unit or amp is passed on.
Find out if you have the external amp, if not swap out the head unit. You'll need to do some wire splicing. You might also want a new amp, I would highly recommend the Class D amps that are small, and simple to add. Check in to Alpine KTP-445u....there may be newer units available now.

Fault is on AM and FM and sound also stays the same with CD playing (Stacker in boot). How would I identify if I have the premium system ? It is the Daimler version so could be - Ill try to find the amp in the trunk? If the amp was not working would I expect to hear anything?
