XJ X300 headlamp removal
sorry if I've missed the useful post but searching the above subject didn't produce relevant X 300 information. Looking to replace the bulbs on a 97 XJ 6- can get the trim rings off no problem but no clue how to get to the bulb. r. Looking at it for 15 minutes with a beer in my hand only lead to loss of the beer.... thanks- d
The actual *bulbs* are replaced from behind.
Open the hood. Grasp the fixture/socket and give it a quarter-turn (maybe half-turn?) counter-clockwise to disengage it from the headlamp itself.
For easier access you may have to remove the black plastic splash sheilds which partially obscure the back of the headlamps
Cheers

Each lamp assembly (no separate lens, per se) has three pegs which simply pop in/out. It's a ball-and-socket type of thing.
Get your fingers behind the lamp and give a good hard pull....and out she comes! Or.....use a long, well placed screwdriver behind the lamp to lever it out.
From time to time the pegs have been known to break, making the job a bit nerve wracking
Reinstallation is simply locating the pegs over the sockets and giving the lamp a good thump.
Cleaning the lamps in the kitchen sink really makes them sparkle and improves lighting. Warm water, a drop of dishsoap inside, slosh-slosh-slosh, repeat a couple times, rinse, let dry.

Yup, just pull 'em straight out.
If WD40 will ease you anxiety then, by all means, spray away
Same for prayer !
I'll revise my previous answer slightly, though. I think pegs are on the body of the car and the sockets are on the lamps. Bit of brain fade there.

Try to do it on a warm day, or after the lamps have been running for a while. It softens the plastic sockets a bit for an easier pull.

i pulled mine out one peg/socket at a time, then washed them in dishwashing liquid/water, then dried them in the sun.
I put a wee blob of lithium grease on each peg at reassembly (that's what was in the cupboard..)
