My driver door inside door latch does not open the door. I can open it from outside (thank GOD). You know with a dead battery and door latch not working you can get stuck in the car.. Very dangerous!!!
It worked occasionally for a few days.. now not a all.
Where can I get directions as to how to repair . I don't have a Jag repair shop within a few hours drive so I would like to attempt myself.if I can get instructions.
You're seeing a common problem. It comes with age. Too much pulling has stretched the cable! It happens to us all eventually.
It is relatively easy to take off the upper door panel to remove and install another interior handle/cable assembly. Find a replacement on the bay or new old stock item for high $$.
The end of the cable has a "bung" that will slide into the L shaped slot at the upper right of this picture of the door latch. The end of the cable is held into the slot by a very small metal clip. Try not to drop it into the door.
You will find relevant threads about door panels and latches with search this forum, but use the X300 / XJ6 section where most of the activity is found for these cars.
The latch resides in a vertical position. Here it is lying down taking a break.

Usually the end of the cable is frayed (and stretched) and will not hold the bung anymore. I don't know of any reliable method to shorten the cable. That wouldn't help if the end is frayed and weak (or already broken off).
In the meantime you can remove the upper panel and probably use the old cable to pull open the latch from the inside. The handle lever is attached to the cable and it can hang free from its housing.
Instructions here: you only really need to take off the upper part of the door panel.
