If I manually downshift to "4" and I slow down to a crawl (5-10 MPH), when I resume speed under mild acceleration, the car stays in fourth. I am accelerating at a rate where I feel the car should be in third at least if not second. I don't recall my 99 XJ-R doing this. Is this normal? The tranny seems fine in all other aspects.

i have an 02 XJR and it will drop down to 2nd if you slow down to 5-10mph

 

Thanks - so if you're above 10 mph or so, it stays in 4th?

 

its been raining for the past few days so i didn't get a chance to try that out until today

my transmission stays in 4th down to that speed but as soon as you touch the gas pedal it drops to 2nd gear even if I have the J-gate in the 4th gear position.

 

Thanks - Then I have a problem. I have to put on quite a bit of throttle, at least half way down, to get it to shift up to 2nd or 3rd. I will have it checked. I appreciate your input

 

Setting shift to '4' inhibits any gears above 4, and same for 3, and 2. Lower gears below the manual setting should work as normal based on speed and engine power demand
