Toys, not being a avid follower of the XJ series, I would wonder if there was a complete redesign of the car for the 2003 model year. In a lot of cases, if the manufacturer got the testing done early or they are wanting to play a numbers game, they will release a model year early in the previous year. This can be the case with that car. I'm sure someone will know the definite answer to this. For example, the new 2011 Ford F-350 is being released for sale in March 2010. That means the truck will actually be built in February 2010. That is just an example of what happened. Ford is notorious for doing this. Kinda like try to find a 2007 F-250/350. They don't exist. Ford skipped this year completely. They held over some of the 2006 trucks to sell in the beginning of 2007 and then they immediately jumped to the 2008 trucks due to the redesign.

The Jaguar is funny about model years but no more so than most manufacturers. Kia has just introduced a 2011 MY car. In the UK a car must be registered as the model year of its assembly, ie; made in '02, its an '02 MY.

The US has no such requirements and a car MY is whatever the manufacturer says it is only that it must meet the emission requirements of the MY.

The XJ8R transitioned to an entirely new design with the 2004 MY. No doubt they manufactured sufficient quantities of cars in '02 to allow a smooth transition to the new design. I have seen XK8Rs with an assembly date of January for the next MY.

yep...my NAS 02 XJR was manufactured in 08/01. Something to do with a slow boat from the UK I guess!

The first year of the 4.2L was in 03 for the XJR. So, with that being said, if it has the 4.2l engine then it would be an 03. If not, it will have the 4.0l and will be an 02 or older.

The 4.2L was never installed in the x308 cars. 2003 US-market XJRs still had the 4.0L.
